(1) Position: Vancouver BEC Database Volunteer
Organization: Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada (BECC)
Location: Vancouver, BC

Are you passionate about making a difference in your community? Would you like to volunteer some free time to make Vancouver more sustainable?

THE OPPORTUNITY

Vancouver Biosphere Eco-City (VBEC) is seeking members for a team developing a Database of Sustainability Projects in the city. This database allows residents to have an overview of many interesting sustainability projects around them. Visit https://Vancouver.BioEcoCity.org to view project descriptions that have been uploaded to date.

BACKGROUND

A Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) is an urban-centred region where teams engage people in sustainable activities to develop a culture of sustainability. VBEC operates though volunteers in association with BEC Canada, a national charity that supports development of BECs in Ottawa, Toronto, Brampton, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

ORGANIZATION OF THE DATABASE

The framework of the database is BECs 10 Themes of Sustainability – Transportation, Energy, Design, Habitat, Food, Natural Capital, Waste, Health, Recreation, and Sense of Place. These are the broad areas of direct action for sustainability. Organizing the database by Theme allows viewers to focus on areas that interest them most.

TASKS OF A DATABASE TEAM MEMBER

To find a sustainability project in urban or rural Vancouver, a team member will conduct an internet search using a Theme of Sustainability or a related keyword, along with "Vancouver" and "sustainability." They will review project descriptions and select relevant one to add to the database. Next, they will write a concise description using a project template. Then they will contact the project owner to verify the description.

Volunteers are requested to spend 3-4 hours per week on the initiative. Part of this time may be monthly meetings and other team meetings as required. A team leader provides training material and advice to team members.
