BOARD POSITIONS

Needed: Board members, Board of Directors
Type: board of directors positions / unpaid
Organization: Sorauren Farmers' Market
Location: virtual / Roncesvalles/ Parkdale/ Toronto ON (although this position is mostly remote, visiting the market and getting to know the community is important)

Who We Are

Sorauren Farmers’ Market Association (SFMA) is a non-profit organization and a welcoming hub providing wholesome fresh food and community connection since 2008. We provide support to local sustainable farmers and producers and work opportunities for those marginalized from the labour market. Generating relationships and dialogue around gardening, sustainable farming and healthy food and implementing measures to lessen the Market’s environmental impact are core aims.

We strive to grow and serve our community as their needs change. In addition to supporting farmers and producers through our weekly market, we manage a variety of other community initiatives, including but not limited to:

  • Traditional Ecological Knowledge Initiative – This project strives to bring more awareness of Indigenous issues and Indigenous knowing. Through demonstrations, activities and talks at our markets, participants are encouraged to foster healthy relationships with themselves, each other, the land, waters, and all beings.
  • Cultural Bounty Days – Initiative development funded by the Carrot Cache Grant, launching in 2025. This project aims to highlight underrepresented foodways and cultural traditions.
  • FARM BOX: During the height of COVID-19, we supported our local community and small farmers and producers who were financially impacted with our FARM BOX program. Farmers were able to generate revenue through these food hampers and we also donated hampers to those in need in the Parkdale neighbourhood with the support of Canadian Red Cross.

The Position

We are looking for 1-2 new directors to join our board. We are keen to continue to expand and diversify our programming outside of our weekly market and are looking for members who would like to join us as we plan for the future.

Preferred Competencies

Candidates are not expected to possess all of these competencies, but we would prefer if they possessed at least one of them.

  • Government relations: in particular, you have experience with municipal stakeholders, working with government representatives on projects, navigating municipal programming and grants, etc.
  • Grant research and writing
  • Fundraising
  • Strategic Communications Management and Planning
  • Previous experience on non-profit boards

Time Commitment

This voluntary commitment involves attending about six virtual board meetings a year (one every two months, meetings are about 1 hour long) and working on initiatives that support the market (about 4 hours a month). Our Market Manager skillfully manages the hands-on, day-to-day operation of our market, so the initiatives that board members will be expected to support will be related to governance, administration, and fundraising/granting.

How to Apply

We aim for our Board to encompass diverse voices, backgrounds and perspectives and encourage all qualified candidates to apply. By valuing a diverse workforce and volunteer base, SFMA is committed to practices that are fair and equitable.

Please visit our website and complete the SFMA Board Member Application Form. The form consists of a few short questions. You will also be asked to attach your resume in the form.
