Peace, Nonviolence & Conflict Resolution
Act for peace and sustainability! Peace groups
(Share: GoodWork.ca/Peace)

Does war really achieve anything? It is worth the pain, the loss of life, the legacy of hate and fear? Or does it just bolster narrow, short-term interests at the expense of everybody's wellbeing and sustainability?

War is often portrayed as ‘defence’, but is it true? Has out-of-control military spending become the greatest national security concern? Is the ever-hungry military-industrial complex scaring us into becoming our own worst enemy? Has the so-called ‘War on Terror’ become an even greater terror?

In the age of climate disruption, floods, droughts and food shortages, we must not let violence overtake us. Can we learn how to resolve conflict without making false excuses and pretexts for war? For our children's sake, if not our own?

What you can do

Peace does not mean inaction, simply avoiding conflict. Let's work together to build peace in our homes, our communities, world...

  • Propaganda & fake news — Immunize yourself as best you can. Not unlike some of the worst dictators in history, today's corporations and governments don't hesitate using propaganda to manipulate us. Learn to see through it — immunize yourself. Is it possible we're being manipulated by our fears, even our ignorance? It feels great to be on what seems to be the "winning" team. But will it come back to haunt us? What is the real 'enemy'? Fear itself? Arms industry profiteering? In our shrinking world, is war obsolete?

If we choose perpetual war, how does that respect either the living or the dead? True leadership takes a very different direction.

Peace is not inaction.

Rather than blaming others, can we change our own lives, our own choices?

War or civilization, which will it be?

“First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

- German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller, 1946
