Position: Heritage Programs Leader
Organization: Pender Island Recreation and Agricultural Hall Association
Location: Pender Island, Gulf Islands BC

The Heritage Programs Leader plays a vital role in organizing and leading diverse activities, fostering community engagement, and contributing to the enhancement of our heritage focus.

The position is flexible as to start and end date, as well as the number of hours per week. We have a total of 650 hours available which would need to be completed by March 31, 2025.

The focal activities of the position will be Fridays and Saturdays, where the Leader is responsible for managing the Youth Leadership Program, a community lunch event and a Saturday Market. In addition, and depending on your availability and interests, you could also work with children’s camps, create and lead workshops, organize and run films, work with seniors programs, support the development of food programs, volunteer engagement, administration, community development, and of course, develop and improve our historical information and artifact collection. Or potentially other areas of interest that align with our purposes.

Key duties will include:

– Assist in the organization and leadership of weekly food and market programs.
– Develop & lead simple weekly crafts and activities for all ages
– Supervise and support volunteers and Youth Leadership Program participants
– Assist with regular events & activities
– Promotion, advertising, marketing & public relations
– General office administration
– Additional duties as required to support the organization’s goals.

Additional tasks, as interested, could include any of the following:

– Develop and lead food, farm & heritage workshops or tours
– Lead a Youth Leadership Camp or Children’s Camp or program
– Contribute to the development of a farm and heritage skills workshop database.
– Enhance heritage and art displays to create an enriching visitor experience

Preferred skills and knowledge:

– Experience developing and leading food or skills related activities.
– Interest or knowledge in heritage, rural or farm life skills and culture.
– Strong communication (verbal and written), customer service, and interpersonal skills.
– Familiarity with local activities, resources and community groups
– Pursuing a degree in Agriculture, Management, Business, Tourism, Community Development…
– Foodsafe certification (preferred)
– Current First Aid Training with CPR & AED (required)
– Current Criminal Records Check (required)

Anticipated Hours: Based on the preference of the successful candidate, this position can be part-time or full-time. A total of 650 hours are available starting as soon as suitable candidate found and must be completed by March 31, 2025. Some remote work is possible. Onsite Fridays/ Saturday work is preferred.

Wage: $18.00 – $21.00 per hour DOE.

This position is dependent on funding from Young Canada Works, as such it is only available to:

  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
  • Have been a part-time or full-time high school, college, CEGEP, or university student in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
  • Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.
