SPECIES AT RISK 

Position: Species at Risk Biologist
Organization: Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board
Location: Inuvik, Northwest Territories (On-site. Relocation package offered)

The Gwich’in Renewable Resources Board (GRRB) is a co-management Board located in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

The GRRB is currently seeking a motivated full-time Species At Risk Biologist. This position is responsible for Species At Risk management, research, technical advice, relationship building and consultation in the Gwich’in Settlement Area (GSA). More specifically the GRRB Species At Risk biologist helps administer and carry out the Board’s responsibilities for species at risk (SAR), which includes the approval of listings and management plans and/or recovery strategies in accordance with the GRRB consultation policy.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop work plans
  • Provide literature resources and advice to drafters of species status reports
  • Conduct technical reviews of species status reports (Federal and Territorial) to ensure data for the GSA is consistent and complete
  • Determine and deliver appropriate engagement methods to seek input from GRRB staff, GRRB members, RRCs and the public into species status reports to ensure they are complete
  • Participate and/or lead community consultations on federally proposed listings, with the assistance of the appropriate government SAR staff
  • Lead consultations for territorially proposed listings for species within the GSA
  • Provide consultation summaries, with the assistance of the appropriate government SAR staff for federally proposed listings
  • Provide advice to drafters of management plans/recovery strategies to ensure they comply with the GRRB’s rules and procedures for consultation
  • Maintain and update literature sources on SAR; ensure these are entered into the GRRB’s library database
  • Identify and recommend SAR related research needs into the GRRB’s research priority process
  • Provide advice into, participate or lead research related to SAR including Traditional knowledge research.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with the Renewable Resources Councils (RRCs) in the GSA communities

Requirements (Applicants MUST demonstrate they meet the following):

  • Minimum of a Bachelor degree in a Biological Science (Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Zoology), with preference for those that hold a P. Biol (AB), RP. Bio (BC), TWS Certification (CWB) or MSc.
  • Work experience in the renewable resources field
  • Sound understanding of scientific methodology and integration with traditional knowledge
  • Experience with report writing and editing
  • Ability to perform technical reviews of reports, proposals, and correspondence and prepare and present summaries to the Board.
  • Sound understanding of relevant legislation and policies including the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement
  • Ability to conduct remote field work
  • Class 5 Driver’s license, standard first aid and successful criminal records check by the first day of employment

Assets (Preference will be given to applicants that meet the following):

  • Knowledge of the GRRB mandate and the role of co-management in the North
  • Sound understanding of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and Board policies
  • Knowledge of management plans relating to Species at Risk in the Gwich’in Settlement Area (GSA)
  • Sound understanding of scientific methodology and integration with traditional knowledge
  • Experience in remote field work, comfortable flying in helicopters and/or small aircraft
  • Experience working in the north and with northern aboriginal communities, particularly in GSA communities
  • Computer literacy, data analysis (including GIS) and report writing
  • Experience with financial planning including preparation of funding proposals and managing budgets
  • Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL), Advanced Wilderness First Aid or willingness to obtain these within the first year of employment.

*Priority will be given to qualified Participants of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and residents of the Northwest Territories

Starting Salary: $90,630 per year
