Job Summary:
The Biological Technician (Summer Intern) will support the following program:
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Columbia Basin Water Monitoring Framework Program Manager, the responsibilities of the Biological Technician include:
Water and Climate Monitoring
- Conduct hydrometric site visits and take stream flow measurements
- Conduct groundwater well site visits
- Download data from environmental data loggers
- Maintain and calibrate equipment and support inventory tracking and management
- Support the maintenance and operation of climate monitoring stations
Program Operations
- Liaise with community volunteers and partners
- Represent the organization at meetings and community events
- Take photos and support the development of communications materials about the programs
- Support fundraising, reporting and other administrative tasks as required
Data Management
- Support data management and record-keeping for the program
- Support the operations of the Columbia Basin Water Hub database
- Carry out preliminary data analysis and interpretation
Core Competencies:
- Experience or understanding of environmental monitoring, preferably relating to hydrometrics
- Willingness to adhere to standards and protocols for water monitoring
- Comfortable working and hiking in remote, wilderness areas
- Experience working in and around swift water
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Capable and willing to work long hours in the field
- Safety oriented
- Attention to detail
Qualifications:
- Certificate, diploma or degree in environmental sciences or related field, or equivalent experience
- Reliable, self-motivated and independent with a demonstrated ability to collaborate well within a team
- Demonstrated ability to support multiple projects, set priorities, meet deadlines and support others to do the same
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Commitment to Living Lakes Canada’s mission
- Basic First Aid (previously OFA Level 1) or greater with additional Transportation Endorsement an asset
- Swiftwater Rescue training an asset
- Own vehicle an asset
Other Requirements:
- Have a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Able to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends and evenings
- Own a computer and have access to the internet
- Willing to provide a Police and Vulnerable Sector Check
- Eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Program and other federal wage subsidies including:
- Between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of the employment
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada following relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
