Volunteer Management

Position: Volunteer Manager
Organization: Small Change Fund, Greener Toronto Fund
Location: Qualified candidates living in or near Toronto should apply. Except for working at live community events (a few per month), work can be done online from home.

Introduction

The Greener Toronto Fund Volunteer Manager Intern will be employed by the Small Change Fund (SCF), in partnership with Green Neighbours Network of Toronto (GNN). The intern will help SCF and GNN deliver on the mission of their joint project, the Greener Toronto Fund, which is to promote a greener, more sustainable Toronto by supporting work that protects, conserves, and enhances the local environment. The intern will support the Greener Toronto Fund project by providing engagement, coordination, communications, and training to mobilize a growing team of volunteers to achieve the project’s sustainability goals in Toronto.

Summary of role

We are seeking an enthusiastic person who is passionate about the environment and community building and keen to learn new skills while working closely with experienced GNN volunteers and SCF professionals. Key focus areas for this role include volunteer and member engagement, volunteer coordination, communications and volunteer training to advance the mission of the SCF/GNN partnership project, the Greener Toronto Fund.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteer and Member Group Engagement

  • Contact current volunteers to confirm their contact information, current roles, and continued interest in volunteering, and any changes in area(s) of interest or availability
    • Update volunteer database as needed
  • Consult GNN and member groups to identify volunteer needs, help develop position descriptions including roles, duties, and skills required
  • Advise member groups on how to prepare future volunteer opportunities for posting on GNN’s website
  • Create and maintain an email distribution list of current and potential GNN and member group volunteers

Volunteer Coordination

  • Match interested volunteers with appropriate volunteer opportunities with GNN or member groups within their local area
  • Mobilize outreach volunteers for tables at community events within their local area

Communications

  • Promote volunteer opportunities through SCF and GNN’s website, social media channels, and newsletter
  • Develop content to attract new volunteers through SCF and GNN’s communications channels

Volunteer Training

  • Develop a training slide deck for online and face-to-face orientation and onboarding of new volunteers
  • Develop a Volunteer Handbook to support training of new volunteers
  • Support the GNN Chair and Co-Chair in recruiting and training a team of volunteer management volunteers

Planning and Reporting

  • Develop and maintain a project plan
  • Prepare monthly activity reports on volunteer engagement successes and challenges for Small Change Fund and GNN
  • Inform GNN Chair’s and Co-Chair’s “report on grant activities and impact” for The Chawkers Foundation

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Required aptitude and skills:

  • Excellent in English, additional languages an asset, culturally sensitive.
  • Experience working as a volunteer
  • Friendly, enjoys interacting with people virtually and in-lif.
  • Passionate about the environment and community-building.
  • Able to write, edit, and present information in an effective and eye-catching manner.
  • Resourceful self-starter keen to learn new things.
  • Commitment to fostering teamwork: Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions.
  • Relationship-building: Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the Greener Toronto Fund.
  • Organizational skills: Creating long-term goals, setting priorities, developing a work schedule, monitoring progress toward goals.

Optional experience in:

  • Managing, training or coordinating volunteers.
  • Social media platforms.
  • Community engagement.
  • Writing training guides or manuals.
  • Creating and managing spreadsheets.
  • Newsletter platforms such as MailChimp.
  • Graphic design tools such as Canva.
  • Use of Google Workspace (Email, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides) and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Orientation and Training

You will work closely with the Chair of GNN on a day-to-day basis. You will receive ongoing onboarding, training, advice, and support from members of the GNN Steering Committee, GNN Communications team, and the GNN and SCF teams.

Time Commitment

This is a 16 hours/week part-time position at $30/hour plus 4% vacation pay, with a flexible work schedule. Duration is 5 months with a possible extension subject to grant success. Except for working at live community events (a few per month), work can be done online from home. You must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes some evening and weekend hours.
