Calling all captains and mates with a Transport Canada Master 150 / Mate 150 certification to be a part of an incredible adventure aboard the 110-foot, 125-tonne brigantine, Fair Jeanne!

Position: Master 150 (Contract)
Organization: Bytown Brigantine Inc.
Voyages based out of: Ottawa & Brockville areas, Ontario

Bytown Brigantine Inc. (BBI) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing youth with transformative experiences through sail training and leadership development.

Operating aboard tall ships such as the SV Fair Jeanne, BBI combines maritime adventure with personal growth, fostering teamwork, responsibility, and resilience in participants. With over 40 years of history, BBI remains committed to empowering young people through experiential education, innovation, and the values of maritime tradition.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Relief Master for the SV Fair Jeanne during its summer voyage season for minimal of two weeks from starting as early as July 19th until August 26, 2025.

This role involves living aboard the vessel and leading a team of 15–18 youth participants in a dynamic, educational, and character-building environment. The 2025 voyages will explore Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario as part of the Tall Ships Challenge. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about mentoring youth and committed to providing transformative experiences through life at sea.

Responsibilities

Safety and Operations

  • Oversee the safety and efficient operation of the vessel, crew, and trainees in compliance with regulations and Bytown Brigantine Standing Orders.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of the ship, equipment, and systems.
  • Report to the Fleet Captain, Executive Director, and President of the Foundation.

Leadership and Training

  • Deliver and lead Bytown Brigantine’s sail training curriculum, creating a positive and rewarding learning environment.
  • Mentor and motivate youth participants, fostering teamwork, leadership, and personal growth.

Volunteer Engagement

  • Encourage and support volunteers participating in ship operations and program activities.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate ship logs, records, and required reports to ensure smooth operations.
  • Draft and enforce standing orders.

Ambassador Role

  • Represent Bytown Brigantine as an ambassador for its mission and programs during all engagements.

Certifications

  • Minimum Master 150 Gross Tonnage Domestic Certificate of Competency (Transport Canada).
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada.

Skills and Attributes

  • Proven leadership and team management experience, with the ability to mentor and motivate.
  • Strong problem-solving and autonomous decision-making skills.
  • Excellent organizational, observational, and communication abilities.
  • Dynamic and disciplined, capable of performing effectively under pressure.
  • Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds.

Compensation

Salary is TBD, based on certification and experience.
