Position: Strategic Engagement Specialist
Organization: Energy Modelling Hub
Location: Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver or Victoria. With occasional travel as required.

About the Energy Modelling Hub (EMH):

The Energy Modelling Hub (EMH) is a pan-Canadian initiative led by the University of Calgary, Institut de l’énergie Trottier (Polytechnique Montréal), the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (University of Victoria), and York University. EMH bridges the gap between energy modellers, policymakers, and stakeholders to support evidence-based decision-making for an affordable, decarbonized, reliable, and equitable energy system in Canada. By curating robust models, convening national and regional dialogues, and facilitating knowledge exchange, EMH fosters collaboration and innovation to address complex energy challenges.

About the Role:

The Strategic Engagement Specialist will play a critical role in advancing EMH’s mission by fostering collaboration and strengthening relationships between Canada’s energy modelling community and its diverse stakeholders. This individual will lead efforts to facilitate strategic engagement activities, manage collaborative initiatives such as the Multi-Model Comparison Forum, and promote awareness and understanding of EMH’s suite of open-source tools. By planning and organizing workshops, webinars, conferences, and knowledge-sharing sessions, the Specialist will ensure that EMH’s resources and insights are accessible and actionable. Additionally, the Specialist will contribute to capacity-building efforts, empowering underrepresented groups, provinces, and territories with the tools, knowledge, and expertise needed to support Canada’s transition to a net-zero future. Through effective event management and stakeholder engagement, the Specialist will help bridge gaps between modellers, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

Location: Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver or Victoria. With occasional travel as required.

Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director, Energy Modelling Hub

Responsibilities:

Program Management and Facilitation

  • Multi-Model Comparison Forum (MMCF):
    • Lead and manage the MMCF, organizing and facilitating a series of in-person and virtual meetings to promote collaborative validation, scenario building, and the exchange of best practices among modelling teams.
    • Foster active participation from diverse stakeholders, ensuring meaningful outcomes from MMCF activities.
  • Stakeholder Education and Awareness:
    • Design and deliver engagement sessions to educate stakeholders about EMH’s open-source modelling tools and their potential applications.
    • Develop outreach strategies to inform and engage a broad audience about the role of modelling tools in supporting evidence-based decision-making.

Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Management

  • Build and nurture strong relationships across EMH’s ecosystem, including policymakers, modellers, industry representatives, and community organizations.
  • Manage the relationships and activities of EMH’s three technical advisory committees on the modelling platform, open data, and knowledge mobilization, ensuring their effective operation and alignment with EMH’s strategic objectives.
  • Facilitate workshops, forums, and engagement activities to strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange.
  • Identify and document stakeholder needs, challenges, and priorities to guide EMH’s initiatives.

Event Management and Convening

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute engaging workshops, webinars, conferences, and events that support EMH’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Develop event programs, secure speakers, and manage logistics, including venue selection, registration, and post-event follow-ups.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify topics and formats that maximize engagement and knowledge sharing.
  • Oversee event promotion and outreach strategies to attract diverse participants.
  • Evaluate event outcomes and incorporate feedback to enhance future initiatives.

Knowledge Transfer and Outreach

  • Develop high-quality communication materials, including presentations and event content, tailored to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Manage and regularly update the content of EMH’s website to ensure stakeholders have access to relevant, accurate, and actionable resources.
  • Promote EMH’s open-source tools and resources through webinars, conferences, and targeted outreach campaigns.

Capacity Building Support

  • Support all interested parties, including governments, industry, and underrepresented groups, by providing the knowledge, tools, and expertise needed to make informed decisions and contribute to Canada’s energy transition.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to design and implement targeted training and knowledge-sharing initiatives to address identified needs and capacity gaps.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, public policy, or a related field; a Master’s degree is an asset.
  • Comfort leading stakeholder engagement and building relationships with academic, government and private industry organizations..
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
  • Proven ability to organize and facilitate workshops, forums, or multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Proven ability to manage and execute events, including workshops, webinars, and conferences, from planning to post-event analysis.
  • Familiarity with energy systems, modelling, or climate change mitigation.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Proficiency with office tools such as Microsoft Office Suite and stakeholder relationship management systems.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse partners across academia, government, and industry.

Assets:

  • Experience managing multi-stakeholder forums or collaborative initiatives.
  • Knowledge of open-source tools and their applications in energy modelling and decision-making.
  • Familiarity with capacity-building strategies and their implementation in diverse contexts.
