Position: Farm and Garden Projects Assistant (Summer Student Position)

Earthwise Society is a not for profit, charitable organization that has been a leader in community-based environmental education for over 30 years. The Society runs demonstration projects for sustainable land use in Tsawwassen and Agassiz BC.

We have an exciting opportunity at our Tsawwassen location for an articulate and energetic individual who is passionate about sustainability, food security, growing food, and wants to make a real difference in our community. Reporting to the Operations Coordinator, the summer students will assist with following:

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Take part in food production activities at the Earthwise Teaching Farm, including planting, maintenance, watering, and harvesting of crops
• Carry out maintenance at the Earthwise Garden including planting, plant care, weeding, and watering to help ensure the site is maintained as a destination for visitors
• Deliver food security programs for Delta Food Coalition (DFC) including surplus food rescue initiative, Shared Harvest fruit gleaning, and Victory Gardens
• Harvest produce and prepare boxes for the DFC Harvest Box and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA); maintain cleanliness of food handling and storage areas

• As part of a team, help with retail initiatives including nursery, floral, and produce sales, including our weekly Farm Cart, set up displays and labeling, greet/interact with visitors
• Participate in the delivery of hands-on education programs on gardening and sustainable land use for children and adults
• Attend outreach events in the community and assist with promotions
• As part of a team plan and implement special event at Earthwise
• Communicate and problem solve to adjust to changing priorities and program needs
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Be a current a full-time student who will be returning to college or university in the fall
• Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
• Canadian citizen or permanent resident (Service Canada requirement)

This is an 8- week, full-time summer student position of 35 hours per week. The wage is $17.85/Hour. One Weekend day of work per week will be required.
