About Environmental Leadership Canada

Environmental Leadership Canada (ELC) is a Canadian registered charity. We envision a future where the health of our planet becomes a central focus in Canadian politics at all levels. We aim to build a new generation of environmental leaders and to boost the capacity of everyday Canadians who care about the environment to engage in our democracy. We work to educate and empower individuals concerned about the environment with a deep understanding of our political system and its decision-making processes. Our programs include the Parliamentary Internship for the Environment, Municipal Climate Internship Program, and FLIP (Future Leadership in Politics) Initiative. We also engage environmental advocates and voters during elections and in between through training, debates, and educational events to build civic engagement and capacity to hold elected leaders accountable for their commitments (e.g. Every Day Advocates and Debates on the Environment).

Position Overview:

The selected candidate will plan, create and coordinate workshops, events and resources aimed at engaging youth in their community and from across Canada in the democratic process and knowledge about and engagement in environmental politics and elections. The Coordinator will focus on helping ELC deliver key sessions of the Future Leaders in Politics (FLIP) Series (which engages hundreds of youth from across Canada each year). This year’s FLIP is focused on bridging rural-urban divides by exploring how environment, climate change and sustainability link to issues faced by young people and their unique communities, and building greater knowledge of government, politics and avenues for civic engagement across levels of government.

Responsibilities

Working collaboratively and with supervision from other team members, the Program Coordinator will support:

Event Management and Capacity Building:

  • Conduct in-depth research on diverse themes within Canada's environmental and political landscape.
  • Support program staff in planning workshops and events, and assisting with facilitations where required.

Communications and Outreach:

  • Extract themes, knowledge and lessons learned from FLIP and ELC’s internship programs and develop into educational materials for other educational events and materials
  • Create educational tools and resources such as backgrounders, toolkits, video, carousels, explainers, etc. to support youth engagement in and knowledge about environmental politics
  • Create social media content and other online communications to leverage knowledge-sharing
  • Outreach to ELC’s community to share and promote educational resources, events and build collaborative relationships

The successful candidate may also support other ELC priorities as assigned.

Desired Skills and Experience

Note: It is not expected that the successful candidate will possess all of these skills and experiences.

  • Experience with youth-led or youth-focused initiatives (e.g. role in youth-led organization or networks, internship) and events (e.g., outreach, logistics, delivery)
  • Experience generating social media strategies and leading design and content creation
  • Graphic design experience (e.g., solid knowledge of/experience using Canva for design)
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, politics (e.g. campaign volunteer, student union role, relevant degree, strong personal interest)

  • Ability to implement an equity lens throughout their work
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently with minimal supervision, stay organized, and collaborate effectively with team members
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including leading meetings and creating copy for digital content

Our commitment extends to making all positions accessible, welcoming, and inclusive for every team member.

As part of our ongoing efforts, ELC is actively working to ensure that every facet of our organization, including the team, board, advisors, and committees, reflects the diversity of the Canadian population.
