Position: Administrative Officer
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

Location: North Gower, Greater Ottawa, Ontario
Housing: A limited number of shared, on-site accommodations are available for out of town applicants.

The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (RVWS) is a registered charity located in North Gower, Ontario. RVWS rehabilitates up to 1,000 injured and orphaned wild mammals and reptiles every year, with the goal of returning them to the wild. RVWS also provides advice to the public on co-existing peacefully with wildlife, and preventing and solving wildlife problems. 

Job Duties

Coordinate office administration

  • Ensure general smooth running of office administration
  • Answer the wildlife hotline, and provide advice to callers or refer to others as needed
  • Prioritize, respond to and track general email and telephone inquires, and refer to others as appropriate
  • Assist in distributing newsletters and other correspondence
  • Contribute to updating and maintaining organization manuals and guidelines
  • Prepare reports
  • Greet clients and visitors
  • Admit patients
  • Receive and track client donations

Maintain supplies

  • Monitor inventory and maintain rehabilitation and office supplies
  • Receive, manage and store all supplies and donations

Maintain records

  • Maintain all paper and electronic files and records
  • Maintain MNR reports and animal databases, including data entry and verification
  • Ensure newsletters, donations forms, and animal care forms are appropriately printed and stocked

Coordinate sanctuary services

  • Update daily volunteer schedules with cancellations/additions
  • Arrange and coordinate veterinary appointments and follow-up
  • Coordinate transportation for patients and supplies to and from the centre
  • Assist with coordinating releases

Other related duties as required

Eligibility

These jobs are made possible under the Canada Summer Jobs program. To be eligible under the program, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

International students are not eligible participants.

Qualifications

  • proof of Covid-19 vaccinations
  • reliable transportation to our facility in North Gower (there is no public transit available)
  • enrollment in a post-secondary institution in business, administration, animal science, environmental studies or related program; or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • previous experience working in an office environment, customer service or another related field
  • ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • ability to set priorities and work under pressure
  • strong organizational, teamwork and problem-solving skills
  • strong verbal and written English communications skills, including telephone skills
  • strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • knowledge of Ontario wildlife an asset

Term and Compensation

This is a 35 hr/wk position for 8 to 16 weeks, beginning as early as April 22. Wages are $19.00/hr. This is an on-site position, with occasional remote work.
