Position Title: Greenhouse Compost Intern
Title of Supervisor: Greenhouse Manager
Organization: Community Garden Society of Inuvik
Location: Inuvik, Northwest Territories

  • Position Type: Hourly, Term April/May - August 31, 2025
  • Pay: This position will be 30 hours per week and the pay rate will be $25 per/hour.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Greenhouse Compost Intern will be supervised by the Manager. They will work with the Board, other staff and greenhouse members to reinvigorate the greenhouse compost system, develop composting plans and procedures, and engage with the public around composting, including workshops throughout the 2025 season.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Greenhouse Labour

  • Gathering, turning, processing compost materials at the greenhouse.
  • Coordinating the diversion of organic waste from the greenhouse, cafe, and community.

2. Resource Development

  • Work virtually with experts in the field of composting to develop procedures for composting at the greenhouse.
  • Put together informational resources for staff and the community about what and how to compost at the greenhouse, including handouts, display boards, and website information.
  • Encourage the sharing of knowledge within the community about composting.

3. Community Outreach

  • Plan and facilitate community workshops and programs focused on compost education.
  • Liaise with community members to pilot a small-scale community compost initiative.
  • Develop posters, social media posts, and other resources to support marketing and outreach of the greenhouse compost program.

4. Supporting Greenhouse Operations

  • Other duties as needed to support operations during the greenhouse season.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  1. Knowledge about or interest in waste diversion, composting, gardening, or plant care is an asset.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Communications Skills

  • Good communication skills, including the ability to listen actively, respond verbally in a manner that is clear and respectful, and seek clarity in ambiguous situations. -Ability to work with a virutal consultant on compost program development.

2. Creativity and Organizational Skills

  • Ability to work well with ‘to-do’ lists, and prioritize time to complete projects at hand - Flexibility, including the ability to adapt and work effectively within a variety of situations and with various individuals or groups. - Ability to think creatively to develop educational and outreach materials.

3. Other Skills

  • First Aid Training and Class 5 Driver's License would be considered assets.
  • Experience using MS Excel, Canva, or other digital tools is an asset.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work in a physically active role.
  • Ability to work weekends and extended hours if needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors.
  • Ability to work daily in contact with plants, plant pollen, dust and soil.
  • Relevant experience will be considered.
