Position: Education Outreach Coordinator
Project: Bird Friendly Windsor Project
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Pelee Island Bird Observatory
Location: Work from home (Windsor/Essex County), Ontario

  • Anticipated Start Date: May 5, 2025
  • Anticipated End Date: June 27 2025
  • Hours: 35 hours per week
  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • Wages: $19.85/hour

Responsibilities:

Assist with an outreach and education campaign for Windsor citizens and local businesses to promote our Bird Friendly Windsor program.

  • Assist with the planning and execution of Windsor’s World Migratory Bird Day celebrations .
  • Create graphics (posters, infographics, flyers, etc.) for print and online about the 2025 theme of World Migratory Bird Day (creating bird-friendly cities and communities).
  • Educate the public through online graphics and short videos on the topic of window collisions as it pertains to wildlife, especially migratory birds using resources and data from relevant and reliable sources
  • Have in person presence at local events such as the Saturday farmer’s market, and other local relevant events.
  • Assist PIBO staff with monthly bird walks with our youth focused bird club.
  • Contact local businesses regarding mitigating window bird strikes and offer to work with them to reduce strikes and provide them with resources.
  • Recruit and assist with managing a volunteer team to apply window collision kits for local businesses when requested.
  • Recruit and assist with managing a team of volunteers to collect preliminary data on window bird collisions from city buildings in preparation for Global Bird Rescue week in October.

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in biology, conservation, ecology or related field or equivalent experience
  • Ability to work independently and collegially with others
  • Demonstrated ability to create and follow work plans and prioritize workload with minimum supervision
  • Genuine interest in local conservation issues, especially with the resident and migratory birds
  • Have full home office with computer and reliable internet
  • Experience with designing and creating resources with graphics of all kinds for both print and online
  • Experience with content creation for businesses on social media platforms- X, Facebook and Instagram
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for a variety of audiences
  • Comfortable with speaking to the public in person
  • Access to a vehicle is required

Preferred qualifications

  • Skills in identifying the wild birds of this region
  • Experience working on the planning and implementation of environmental campaigns
  • Experience working with and managing volunteers
