Position: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Coordinator
Type: age 30 & under / summer

Location: Ideally located in Toronto, Kingston, or elsewhere on the Great Lakes. For the right candidate we *may* consider a different location.

  • Position Type: 24-week contract, 30 hours/week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. One position available.
  • Wage Range: $21/hr

Swim Drink Fish Canada is a charity dedicated to ensuring swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for everyone. By using community science and storytelling, we inspire millions of people to know and safeguard their waters. We have teams across Canada.

Job Description

The GIS Coordinator will work with our Technology team to support Swim Drink Fish's mission by creating and maintaining geospatial data and web mapping applications. This internship will provide hands-on experience in GIS, web mapping, and data visualization. You will report to our Manager of Technology and Innovation and work alongside other staff and volunteers. We work as a team and are always willing to help each other.

This is primarily a work-from-home position. Reliable internet access is important.

Here’s what you need to do…

  • Create and maintain interactive web maps using ESRI ArcGIS Online to visualize spatial data related to water quality, pollution, and other environmental issues.
  • Design and implement user-friendly web map interfaces, including custom basemaps, legends, and interactive elements.
  • Integrate data from various sources, such as GIS databases, spreadsheets, and real-time sensors, into web maps.
  • Develop and maintain GIS-based impact tracking systems to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Swim Drink Fish's programs and initiatives.
  • Collect and analyze data on project outcomes, such as water quality improvements, community engagement, and policy changes.
  • Visualize impact data using maps, charts, and other data visualization techniques.
  • Collaborate with the Storytelling department to create engaging and informative StoryMaps that highlight Swim Drink Fish's work.
  • Clean, process, and analyze geospatial data using GIS software.
  • Create and maintain geodatabases to store and manage spatial data.
  • Perform spatial analysis tasks, such as buffer analysis, overlay analysis, and network analysis.
  • Assist with Swim Drink Fish outreach and engagement events
  • Assist with other Swim Drink Fish initiatives as required

Here’s what you need to have…

  • Excellent social and communication skills
  • A passion for water stewardship and conservation
  • Strong GIS skills, including experience with ESRI ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization techniques.
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Bonus points if you…

  • Love data and spreadsheets
  • Are willing to share any maps you are particularly proud of
  • Love helping people take long walks on the beach
  • Know (or have now googled) what Beach Action Values (BAVs) are
  • Love the water!
