Camp Kawartha Environmental Summer Camp 

Hiring: Canoe Trip Leader
Organization: Camp Kawartha

Location: 1010 Birchview Road, Douro-Dummer, near Peterborough, Ontario

Housing: Live on-site. The successful applicant will have the oppourtunity to live at Camp Kawartha for the entire summer season, with room and board provided. Candidates from accross Canada are welcomed to apply.

  • Rate of Pay: Starting rate of $5000 for the summer of work
  • Contract Duration: June 18th, 2025 – August 22nd, 2025

Are you passionate about working with children and teaching and learning about the natural world? Camp Kawartha is looking for enthusiastic individuals with experience in Canoe Tripping that have a passion for the outdoors and working with children. This position is ideal for anyone with a background in outdoor education, envrionmental kinship, and camping and canoe tripping.

Job Overview:

Canoe trip leaders have the responsibility of leading our canoe trip excursions to the Kawartha Highlands and Algonquin Park. In this role, Canoe Trippers will have the opportunity to share their love of the outdoors through taking campers on excursions that prioritize safety, fun, and learning about the natural world! While on trip, Canoe Trippers are responsible for the safety and well-being of everyone in their care while also providing a fun and engaging experience. While at camp, Canoe Trippers are tasked with preparing for future trips and engaging in camp activities and supervision duties. Senior canoe trippers have the added responsibility of supporting the management of the Canoe Tripping department, and leading and planning longer excursions up to 9-nights long.

Responsibilities

Some responsibilities of the role include:

  • Leading canoe trips in Algonquin park and the Kawartha highlands up to 9-nights long
  • Creating a safe, comfortable, respectful, and fun trip experience for campers
  • Ensuring the physical and emotional safety of campers and fellow staff
  • Participate in the planning, packing, and sending out of canoe trips
  • Assist in the organization and management of the Canoe Tripping Department when necessary
  • Communicate with the healthcare staff about trip participants’ healthcare needs ahead of canoe trips
  • Run exposure periods, lessons, and interest choices as needed
  • Monitor campers’ health and manage camper hygiene
  • Prepare for coming trips and communicate needs to Tripping Director

Qualifications

  • National Lifeguard Certification is required
  • Wilderness Advanced First Aid or Wilderness First Responder is required (opportunity to gain this certification will be provided for staff members through Camp Kawartha ahead of the summer)
  • Significant experience in canoe tripping is required
  • Recent Criminal Reference Check
  • Experience working with children is an asset
  • Additional wilderness or environmental certification/experience is an asset

Skills/Highlights:

  • Familiarity with canoe tripping, canoeing safety, navigation, first aid, and camping skills such as fire building and cooking
  • Enthusiasm, patience and understanding
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to problem solve in the moment
  • A love of the outdoors and a willingness to share and learn more about the natural world
