Summary

Canadians for Tax Fairness (C4TF) is Canada’s leading advocate for progressive taxation for economic justice. C4TF provides data-driven research and analysis supporting tax policies aimed at building a clean, fair and inclusive economy, reducing inequalities, and funding quality public services. Collaborating with a wide array of partners, C4TF works to transform Canada’s conversation about taxes and win meaningful reforms that ensure everyone pays their fair share.

We are seeking an Executive Director who will be a passionate and unapologetic champion of fair taxation, recognizing it as a fundamental pillar of democracy and equity in Canada.

The ideal candidate will be a persuasive advocate in the media, among policymakers, and across civil society. Our staff and board work closely as a team. We seek a collaborative leader who empowers each member to contribute and thrive in their role.

Job Description

C4TF’s Executive Director is responsible for developing and executing the strategic direction and goals of the organization, while consulting with board, staff and allies to achieve the most impact. The ED serves as the primary spokesperson for the organization and reports directly to the board of directors. The role requires leadership in all organizational functions, including advocacy, research, communications, fundraising, and administration.

Advocacy

  • Lead the development and implementation of advocacy strategies to win tax policy reform, including public campaigns, lobbying, and election-based analysis and commentary.
  • Collaborate with partners to advance joint advocacy efforts on concrete policy recommendations.
  • Ensure the organization complies with legislation governing advocacy activities.

Research

  • Work with policy analysts to determine research and policy analysis projects that support strategic advocacy efforts, and oversee their production.
  • Undertake periodic research and analysis to bolster the organization’s capacity.
  • Ensure research and analysis is of the highest quality and aligns with C4TF’s mandate.
  • Support the policy analysts in cultivating collegial relationships with policy advisors and analysts in allied organizations.

Communications

  • Work with the communications coordinator to develop communications strategies and products that effectively reach target audiences.
  • Contribute to communications products such as op-eds, blogs, press releases, and presentations.
  • Represent the organization in public, media, and allied forums, with delegation to other members of the team as appropriate.
  • Review and approve published materials, unless otherwise delegated.
  • Support the communications coordinator in building relationships with communications leads in allied organizations.

Fundraising

  • Collaborate with the fundraising coordinator to develop and implement fundraising strategies that grow and diversify the organization’s funding base, matching the annual budget’s funding expectations.
  • Foster new relationships and maintain existing relationships with organizational donors and funders, with delegation to other members of the team as appropriate.
  • Review and approve funding materials and requests, unless otherwise delegated.
  • Support the fundraising coordinator in building relationships with progressive fundraisers in the sector.

Administration

  • Provide executive decision-making on operations, staff hiring and management, delegation of responsibilities, and expense approvals.
  • Lead program and financial reporting to the board and ensure compliance with legal requirements for non-profits.
  • Undertake regular administrative and financial tasks, and delegate to staff and contractors as needed.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum six years of experience in a non-profit or comparable environment, including at least three years in a managerial role.
  • Professional experience in public policy in Canada, with a solid understanding of tax policy in Canada and internationally.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to be a compelling spokesperson.
  • Excellent technical skills with commonly used computer tools and financial management systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic justice, equity and human rights.
  • Strong understanding of Canada’s progressive landscape, with the ability to leverage relationships with allied organizations.
  • Experience in policy advocacy and a clear vision for how a small organization can contribute to achieving tax policy change.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive work environment.
  • Knowledge of individual donor fundraising, stewardship, and marketing.
  • Compassion, humour, and patience.
  • Fluency in English is essential; fluency in French is an asset.

Terms of Work

This is a four-day-per-week position, pro-rated to a fulltime salary range of $90,000 - $100,000 annually, commensurate with experience. C4TF is a virtual organization, with employees working from home and receiving a $100 monthly stipend for internet and phone use. The position includes four weeks of paid vacation, plus the week between Christmas and New Year's, all statutory holidays, and up to 10 days of annual sick leave.
