Ecological Restoration

Position: Fluvial Geomorphologist

Who are we:

Redd Fish Restoration Society (Redd Fish) is a registered charity focused on restoration, research, and education. For over 29 years, Redd Fish has worked with the nuučaanuł Nations in Clayoquot and Barkley Sound on ecological restoration in their hahuułi (territory). Our leadership is composed of a board of directors with appointed representation from the five Nations in the region including the hiškʷiiʔatḥ (Hesquiaht) Nation, ʕaaḥuusʔatḥ (Ahousaht) Nation, ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht) Nation, Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government, and tukʷaaʔatḥ Nation Government. Together our mission is to use the best available science, technology, and Indigenous ecological knowledge to restore damaged coastal ecosystems and rebuild wild salmon stocks.

About the Role:

As a Fluvial Geomorphologist, you will play a critical role in supporting the planning and implementation of our in-stream restoration projects. The role involves a combination of desktop and fieldwork to conduct watershed and fish habitat assessments, site level monitoring to develop restoration projects, planning with our many project partners, and supervising in-stream construction work. Within this role there is flexibility depending on the applicant to conduct a variety of assessments related to restoration work as well as the potential for conducting research projects that address knowledge gaps in restoration practices on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. This role is an in-person position based in Ucluelet or Tofino, BC, and is full time 30-40 hrs/week.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Supporting Redd Fish in-stream restoration process through desktop analysis, planning and design process, field assessments, support during construction, and report writing.
  • Conducting research related to areas of expertise including fluvial geomorphology and hydrology.
  • Assisting with project management for in-stream restoration projects including grant writing, obtaining permits, developing budgets, and managing deliverables.
  • Managing geospatial components of Redd Fish Restoration, which includes overseeing quality of geospatial work and surveying, reviewing map templates and GIS data outputs, managing data, and acquiring lidar.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior staff members in areas of expertise.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of science in environmental or earth science, fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, or a closely related field
  • 1-2 years work experience in planning, managing, and implementing restoration projects in a river environment
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, and tenacity for logistics in remote locations.
  • Ability to work outside in remote conditions, and ability to lift and carry heavy materials over uneven ground.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and Level 1 First Aid (within first 3 months of starting).

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Preference given to nuučaanuł (Nuu-chah-nulth) applicants.
  • Ph.D. or Masters Degree in environmental science, fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, or a closely related field
  • At least 2 years of post-education experience with in-stream restoration and design, particularly focused on salmon habitats
  • Proven ability to convey complex concepts in a clear and concise manner, both verbally and written
  • Able to solve problems and work collaboratively with other experts on project teams
  • Strong detail-orientated work style
  • Experience with surveying using a total station and GNSS, as well as installing scientific instruments such as water level loggers and temperature loggers.
  • Experience with GIS software, mapping, and drafting survey results

Additional qualifications:

  • Swiftwater Rescue, Small Vessel Operator, Pleasure Craft Operator Card, Transport Canada UAV Pilot certification.
  • Experience operating small vessels in west coast marine environments.
  • Experience maintaining hydrometric stations and developing rating curves.
  • Professional Geoscience designation for British Columbia (P.Geo.).

Compensation:

Redd Fish Restoration Society offers competitive e compensation that includes Extended Health and Dental benefits (after completion of the probation period), training and professional development opportunities. The expected wage range is between $35/hour and $55/hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
