Position: Program Lead – Six Nations Engagement

The Starfish Canada is seeking to hire a Program Leader to oversee and liaise with organizations and schools in the Six Nations Reserve and community and nearby regions.

The successful applicant will support the co-design of environmental health workshops for teachers in the Six Nations Reserve and Hamilton Schools. The workshops will center on youth environmental literacy in Haudenosaunee cultural perspectives while helping students translate their learning into tangible climate action and community engagement projects.

The successful candidate will support the strategic direction of the project, guide and sustain partnerships, and collaborate with Indigenous and non-Indigenous teachers throughout the course of the project.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning

  • Engage in community outreach activities to promote and gather interest for project activities.
  • Support the Senior Education Manager and Director, Learning and Development to co-design workshops and facilitate conversations with Six Nations teachers and community members.
  • Create and develop an evaluation framework to assess co-design outcomes.

Educational Content Development

  • Liaise with various audiences with Six Nations of the Grand River Elders, educators, community members, students, youth, and non-Indigenous teachers and students from Hamilton.
  • Support the facilitation process of virtual and in-person sessions with the leadership and co-design teams.
  • Create, organize, and lead engaging workshop activities for students in Six Nations and Hamilton schools.
  • Manage a budget for the project and organize all necessary workshop materials.

Engagement and Evaluation

  • Communicate and collaborate with school staff as well as external partners in the implementation of the project, activities, and special events;
  • Support the creation of storytelling practices working alongside a videographer to capture community-level impact stories.
  • Support the mid-term and final report, including a full list of activities and participating schools.

Ideal Qualifications

Education and certifications:

  • Experience working with Indigenous groups and knowledge of Indigenous perspectives (particularly interweaving Indigenous and Western worldviews).
  • Experience working with mixed-aged groups including students, teachers, and community leaders.
  • Post-secondary training in social science or Indigenous Studies or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Proficiency in program monitoring and evaluation, particularly in an educational setting.

Skills

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with excellent active listening skills. Experience working in a cross-cultural context;
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong internal and external relationships.
  • Able to work cross-functionally and effectively at all levels in an organization and with community partners.
  • Must be a team player and able to work collaboratively through a co-design approach.
  • Excellent collaborative leadership and organizational skills.
  • A strong degree of integrity and judgement.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite products (Docs, Sheets, Slides), Canva, and Slack.

Indigenous individuals with a combination of relevant skills, life experiences and interests will be strongly considered.

Work Arrangements:

  • Region: Six Nations Reserve and surrounding areas (i.e Hamilton, Brampton)
  • Some transportation is required: access to your own vehicle is required
  • 20 hours per week on a part-time, flexible schedule 20 hours/week

A selection of applicants will be invited to a 30-minute interview with our Director, of Learning and Development (Sujane Kandasamy) and our Senior Education Manager (Nicolas Peña) in January 2025.

Applicants will be requested to use Google Meet or Zoom for a video conference call and to be on camera unless there is an identified accessibility requirement communicated in advance.

Candidates are not required to memorize all details of this package, and they are welcome to reference it during the interview. Applicants will also be given a selection of the interview questions 24 hours in advance.
