Position: Director of Programs
Organization: Ecotrust Canada
Location: Based in Vancouver, BC, and will require regular travel throughout Canada. Ecotrust Canada is open to the person selected for this position being located elsewhere in British Columbia, with the understanding that frequent travel to Vancouver may be required.

Start Date: October 15, 2024
Position Status: Full Time, Salaried.
Salary Range: Starting $110,000 – $120,000 annually, depending on experience.
Work Week: Ecotrust Canada has adopted a 4-day work week, of 32 hours, Monday through Thursday.

Job summary

Ecotrust Canada is seeking an experienced executive to enhance innovation, collaboration, and communication in the organization, with a specific focus on creating greater collective impact across its programs — Climate Resilience, Food Systems, Community Energy, Indigenous Homelands, and Community Fisheries.

The Director of Programs will report to, and work closely with the CEO, and will manage, support, and mentor senior program staff. They will work with staff to remove roadblocks to teams’ success, including allocating resources, setting priorities, fostering needed skills, and career development. They will also be responsible for leveraging capacity and expertise across program teams, and for identifying and securing funds to support program-specific work.

This is a full-time position based in Vancouver, BC, and will require regular travel throughout Canada. Ecotrust Canada is open to the person selected for this position being located elsewhere in British Columbia, with the understanding that frequent travel to Vancouver may be required.

Who you are

You are a leader with a track record of internal and external collaboration, relationship management, coaching, mentorship, program evaluation, fundraising, budgeting, and strategic planning. You have experience creating systems-based solutions that advance environmental and social well-being in concert. You know the funding landscape as it pertains to social change organizations, and you have the knowledge and confidence to win major private and government grants and contracts.

You have experience and understanding of life and livelihoods in rural and remote communities. Likewise, you have a strong understanding of complex issues related to Indigenous rights and title, and the impacts of rural development on the cultural-ecological and economic futures of Indigenous Peoples. You are passionate about, and dedicated to, Indigenous resurgence, reconciliation, and decolonization.

You are adept at identifying synergies and opportunities across programs, teams, and mandates to realize programmatic and strategic goals. You enjoy collaborating with, and enabling, the professional development of staff and have proven experience as a manager and mentor who is humble, patient, collaborative, and empathetic. You have the utmost integrity and the ability to nurture a culture of transparency. You are proactive, analytical, curious, creative, and flexible. You understand how to translate human capacity, relationships, and financial resources into on-the-ground impact. You have experience in financial and economic analysis, planning, and evaluation. Responsibilities:

  • Work with leadership to set strategic priorities and create synergy across Ecotrust Canada’s fisheries, energy, climate, homelands, and food programs in service of the greater collective impact.
  • Oversee implementation of an impact evaluation and monitoring framework for the organization and foster a learning culture within the organization around that framework.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop senior staff to grow their initiatives, increase impact, and advance decolonization within their programs.
  • Work closely with the CEO and program leads to meet annual budget targets through active fundraising with private and government grants and contracts.
  • With the CEO and the organization’s board, continue implementation of the organization’s Reconciliation Framework.
  • Explore and identify solutions to issues challenging program success, including allocating resources, setting priorities, and fostering needed skills.
  • Work closely with communications staff to convey Ecotrust Canada’s impact on its website and through the most effective digital media platforms.
  • Play a key role in leading internal staff communications, including developing organization-wide training and development opportunities as appropriate.
  • Co-lead Ecotrust Canada’s Leadership Team with the CEO, including convening and facilitating regular leadership team meetings.
  • Model Ecotrust Canada’s core values in all aspects of work.

Technical/Programmatic:

  • Experience creating systems-based solutions at the intersection of environmental and social well-being.
  • Experience building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, especially within rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
  • Experience in social change program innovation, impact delivery, and impact evaluation.
  • Ability to lead multiple program departments and develop cross-team processes.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Understanding of the funding landscape for social change organizations and experience fundraising and managing private and government grants/contracts in support of program execution.

Preferred but not required:

  • Preference for 8+ years of leadership, including 5+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Preference for individual with significant work experience in financial and economic analysis, planning, and evaluation.
  • Preference for the position to be based out of Vancouver, BC. However, Ecotrust Canada is open to the person selected for this position being located elsewhere in BC with the understanding that frequent visits to Vancouver may be required.
  • Ability to travel frequently throughout Canada.
  • Experience with place-based economic development and natural resources management.
  • Specific experience leading programmatic work that intersects with at least one of Ecotrust Canada’s core program areas of climate, energy, fisheries, food, housing, and/or work supporting Indigenous communities.
  • Experience with public policy as it relates to our core program areas.
  • Experience living and working in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities across Canada.
