Hiring: Volunteer Coordinator (paid, part-time)
Organization: Save Our Slopes
Location: Remote / Hybrid (Preference for candidates in Alberta)

Hours: ~10-15 hours per week
Compensation: $25-30/hour depending on experience

About Save Our Slopes

Save Our Slopes is a grassroots movement dedicated to protecting the Eastern Slopes from threats to the natural environment. We engage communities, advocate for policy change, and lead restoration efforts. With an outpouring of support from volunteers, we are looking for a Volunteer Coordinator to help turn interest into action.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly organized, people-oriented Volunteer Coordinator to manage our growing volunteer program. This role will engage new volunteers, coordinate activities, and ensure ongoing participation, playing a crucial role in mobilizing our community to protect Alberta’s landscapes.

This part-time, flexible position (10-15 hours per week) is ideal for someone passionate about grassroots organizing, environmental advocacy, and community building.

Responsibilities

Phase 1: Interest & Engagement

  • Send welcome emails and track volunteer sign-ups.
  • Create and manage the volunteer interest form to categorize engagement levels.
  • Schedule monthly volunteer orientation calls and follow up with attendees.
  • Manage the volunteer database (Airtable or Google Sheets) to track participation.

Phase 2: Orientation & First Engagement

  • Host virtual or in-person onboarding events (1-2 per month).
  • Assign volunteers into appropriate teams (outreach, policy, restoration, etc.).
  • Match volunteers with specific tasks or leadership roles based on skills and interests.
  • Follow up with new volunteers to ensure engagement.

Phase 3: Ongoing Engagement & Growth

  • Maintain a volunteer chat group (Slack, WhatsApp, etc.) for real-time engagement.
  • Coordinate volunteer shifts for events, protests, restoration days, or outreach efforts.
  • Track volunteer participation and celebrate milestones (recognition, shoutouts, gifts).
  • Send bi-weekly email updates with upcoming actions, training, and success stories.

Phase 4: Leadership Development & Retention

  • Identify and train volunteer leaders to take on more responsibility.
  • Develop simple training materials for onboarding and leadership development.
  • Conduct exit surveys and re-engagement efforts for inactive volunteers.
  • Plan monthly check-in calls with engaged volunteers to keep momentum.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Strong in interpersonal skills and enjoys engaging with volunteers.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, capable of managing volunteer data and communication.
  • Passionate about environmental advocacy and community-driven movements.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, able to work independently and suggest improvements.
  • Tech-savvy or willing to learn, with experience or interest in using Google Suite, email automation, and Airtable (or other tracking tools).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with community organizing or grassroots campaigns.
  • Familiarity with social media and online advocacy.
  • Experience managing volunteers, teams, or event logistics.
