Marine / Coastal Conservation Research Field Station

Six-Month Contract / Seasonal

Salmon Coast Society is a charitable conservation organization and hub for coastal research with a field station located in Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis territory, in the Broughton Archipelago, near Echo Bay, BC. Salmon Coast supports research and public education to protect and celebrate the wildlife, ecosystems and communities of the Broughton Archipelago. We are hiring one person to fill the role of Research Crew Lead for our 2025 field season.

Duties of the position may include:

  • Lead kelp program (shoreline surveys from motor vessel, retrieving temperature data loggers) including comms, project and data management, scheduling and logistics;
  • Lead community-based contaminant sampling pilot program (focused on PFAS in fish and shellfish);
  • Assist in weekly sampling of juvenile salmon and sea lice using a beach seine at sites in the Broughton Archipelago;
  • Contribute to maintaining sampling equipment, assisting in vessel maintenance;
  • Contribute to general needs of the field station, including cleaning and maintenance;
  • Support other research projects on an as-needed basis;
  • Assist in care and maintenance of gardens;
  • Support administrative aspects of a nonprofit organization;
  • Support education, outreach and communication projects, including public presentations;

An ideal candidate would have:

  • Experience boating; PCOC and/or SVOP and Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate
  • Interest and awareness of local conservation issues
  • Interest in supporting indigenous sovereignty, decolonization and reconciliation
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Physically and mentally ready for physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions
  • Experience and/or comfort with living in communal situations
  • Other skills/interests that complement the needs of the station (photography, social media, gardening, carpentry, boat maintenance, education/outreach experience)

Terms: This is a six month contract starting on or around March 20. We offer $3200-4000/month (depending on experience) for an average of 40 hours per week, and communal housing and dinners are provided. SVOP will be required before the start date.
