Purpose

You will play a key role in driving Generate Canada's financial health and operational excellence. Your responsibilities will include expert oversight of our $6MM+ budget and administration across multiple legal entities and the Board of Directors. You will provide important insights to support organizational decision-making, while ensuring seamless financial operations. With a new set of complex and significantly scaled-up programs coming online across our decentralized operating model, there will be ample opportunity for you to apply your creativity in building and optimizing processes.

What You'll Do

Financial Strategy and Advisory

  • Lead the budgeting, forecasting, financial planning processes to allow for good decision-making by those accountable for individual budgets, and clarity on the overall organizational trajectory and various risks.
  • Review and improve financial systems and workflows to enhance efficiency and controls, including updating or implementing automations and new software.
  • Advise on compliance requirements for nonprofit and charitable operations and financial accounting, including the management of multiple legal entities.

Financial Operations

  • Act as the primary liaison with our auditor, banking institutions, and third-party bookkeeping provider to ensure accurate and timely financial processing.
  • Oversee, and execute end-to-end financial operations including: monthly financial close and reporting; payroll support; accounts receivable and accounts payable, including honorariums, grants, donations, and pass-through payments; expense management; revenue recognition, including tracking and reporting against grant requirements
  • Ensure compliance with CRA and charity regulations, including audits and financial filings.
  • Ensure documentation for contracts are executed in alignment with policies and stored appropriately.
  • Partners with the Vice President in developing, maintaining, and communicating financial policies and procedures.

Board Reporting and Administration

  • In partnership with the Vice President, prepare and present financial reports to the Board of Directors, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Provide support for Board meetings, including preparing materials, taking minutes, and managing correspondence.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Work closely with decentralized teams to ensure financial systems balance compliance, efficiency, and information required for good decision-making.
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders to streamline processes and ensure alignment with organizational goals.

Essential Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in financial operations.
  • Advanced skills in spreadsheets and financial software to produce analysis for multiple stakeholders.
  • Proven track record at learning and/or applying software (and ideally automations) to manage and improve processes.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, with a focus on collaboration and team support.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex information.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to evolving organizational needs.
  • Nonprofit sector experience, particularly with registered charities, preferred
  • Experience with supporting Boards of Directors or other governance entities, preferred

Compensation: 80,000 - 85,000
