Position: Grassroots Engagement and Membership Coordinator

Location: Hybrid in Halifax, Nova Scotia – in-person for events and supervising the canvass team.

About The Position

The Grassroots Engagement & Membership (GEM) Coordinator leads recruiting, engaging, and mobilizing grassroots volunteers in the activities of Sierra Club Canada Foundation in order to further the organization’s goals of the Decade of Change. The GEM Coordinator will report to the Sierra Club Canada’s Executive Director and Senior Development Manager, and collaborate closely with volunteer chapter leaders.

This year goals for the position include: increasing our membership, enhancing membership & volunteer engagement, representing members' voices in our communications, and creating opportunities for recognizing members’ contributions.

Responsibilities and Scope

  • Develop a membership engagement strategy for SCCF, working in collaboration with Chapters, staff, and Board of Directors
  • Act as support to Chapter Executive Committees and support nomination and other processes to ensure Executive Committee function and governance
  • Develop a clear and comprehensive strategy for grassroots fundraising and advocacy campaigns, aimed at mobilizing volunteers and supporters to engage their networks
  • Create outreach campaigns incorporating various advertising strategies, including email, CRM, direct mail, and social media, to promote both fundraising and advocacy campaigns effectively
  • Implement data collection methods and strategies to optimize campaign effectiveness, audience engagement, audience segmentation and feedback
  • Supervise membership canvassers to perform public outreach and membership recruitment in order to increase membership in the organization
  • Create recruitment materials and outreach materials and social media content
  • Collaborate closely with Communications and Development staff to achieve shared objectives and overall high quality experience for supporters and volunteers
  • Organize the annual general meeting (AGM) of the members of the organization and ensure the AGM achieves membership goals and adheres to bylaws policies, and other corporate requirements
  • Initiate, promote, and coordinate membership training and skillshare opportunities
  • Stay informed about current trends in grassroots fundraising and advocacy to adapt strategies accordingly and maximize impact.
  • Focus on legislation or issues relevant to SCCF’s mission

Skills, Competencies & Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal & written
  • Enthusiasm for working with volunteers and for SCCF Decade of Change goals
  • Experience supervising young staff &/or volunteers
  • At least 1 yr of database &/or CRM experience
  • Familiar with online file sharing systems such as Dropbox, Google Drive
  • Ability to work independently
  • Must have secure and stable internet & phone available to you
  • Available for evening meetings to accommodate volunteers’ schedules and at least one annual weekend meeting (AGM)
  • A team player who values diversity, who collaboratively shares information, and who recognizes and draws on team strengths to advance our fundraising efforts
  • Bilingualism is an asset.
