About Us

The Gorge Waterway Nature House is a communal educational space located in Esquimalt Gorge Park and operated by the Gorge Waterway Action Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the Gorge Waterway and its associated ecosystems. The Gorge Waterway Action Society acts as stewards for Esquimalt Gorge Park, where the Nature House is located.

The Nature House offers:

• a touch tank with live marine animals from our coast;
• various displays that provide hands-on learning about local terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems;
• a library of books about local ecosystems;
• a "Kid Zone" with books, colouring activities, and games.

Nature Interpreters

Our Nature Interpreters are responsible for creating and delivering youth-focused, hands-on environmental educational programs at the Nature House, in Esquimalt Gorge Park, and in the wider community; managing visitor experience in the Nature House by designing creative displays, scheduling staff and volunteers, and managing concession and gift shop sales; and creating artistic interpretive content for the Nature House, our website, and social media.

Additional responsibilities may include planning and promoting community events, consulting with the Charity Administration and Development Team on grant writing for project funding, recruiting and onboarding new volunteers, and coordinating with our Sustainability Interpreters, Indigenous Nature Interpreters, Climate Interpreters, Biologists, and Restoration Technicians to update Nature House and online content.
