Position Title: Conservation Crew Member
Organization: Freshwater Conservation Canada
Location: Guelph, Ontario

  • Hours: 40hrs/week; Mid-April to late November; Possibility of extension depending on funding
  • Wage: $19/hr

Freshwater Conservation Canada is a science-based, national, charitable conservation organization. We were founded in 1972 in response to challenges to freshwater fisheries through a focus on volunteer-driven, science-based resource conservation and hands-on activities. Our mission is “to conserve, protect and restore Canada's freshwater ecosystems and their coldwater resources for current and future generations”. Our programs have a watershed focus and are implemented directly by staff and through engagement of our local chapters, volunteers, and partners. Our programs and projects focus on assessment, monitoring and restoration work on freshwater systems, improving water quality and quantity, healthy habitats and healthy freshwater communities.

Position Mandate:

This job is physically demanding and requires various tasks, including lifting, digging, dragging, and carrying weighted items, as well as operating equipment and hand tools, often in peri-urban or rural settings, sometimes under inclement weather conditions. This position is based in Guelph, but work will be conducted in riparian areas and streams throughout southern and eastern Ontario. Some overnight travel is expected and may include a stay of 1 or 2 weeks excepting weekends.

Responsibilities:

This position requires basic field skills and experience as well as excellent teamwork and communication skills. Working under the supervision and direction of the Conservation Program Coordinator and Conservation Crew Lead, responsibilities include:

  • Assist in executing daily work plans, including invasive species removal, site preparation, tree planting, bioengineering, low-tech process-based restoration, and post-restoration maintenance and monitoring
  • Collaborate with the Crew Lead and fellow crew members to ensure that project objectives are met safely and efficiently
  • Operate equipment and tools under supervision, always adhering to safety protocols
  • Participate in community outreach events and assist in creating outreach materials
  • Support fish and fish habitat monitoring and assessment efforts
  • Collect data and assist in report preparation
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Experience or knowledge of forestry and ecological restoration
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in forestry, ecology, biology, environmental science, or natural resource management is preferred
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficiency with chainsaws, brush cutters, and hand tools
  • Dependable, flexible, and resourceful with excellent teamwork skills
  • Knowledge about freshwater ecology and conservation is an asset
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations is an asset
  • Class G Driver’s License with good driving record
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification required

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

While not essential for the role, candidates possessing these qualifications will be ranked higher.

  • Chainsaw Operator’s Training & Certification
  • Forestry Exterminator License
  • ATV driving certification or experience
