Position: Wetland and Waterfowl Research Technician
Type: age 30 & under / summer

Salary: Starting salary at $17.53/hr, based on a 35-hour work week. Salary for this position will commensurate with each individual's education and/or experience as it relates to the position.

The Opportunity

Ducks Unlimited Canada’s Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research is seeking a Wetland and Waterfowl Research Technician for a 4 to 6 month term position. This position will support a variety of research projects that seek to understand wetland ecosystem services in the Prairie Pothole Region. The Wetland and Waterfowl Research Technician will work under the supervision of a Research Biologist and/or Research Scientist to assist with field work activities and data collection.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Assist with the collection of field data on wetland water quality, wetland vegetation, carbon stocks and GHG emissions using a variety of techniques.
• Assist in organizing, managing, and annotating field data from drones, automated water quality and water level recording units, vegetation samples, and water samples.
• Assist in organizing and maintaining field equipment.
• As a DUC ambassador, assist in delivering conservation messages, primarily with external audiences, that will establish and/or maintain stakeholder or partner relationships.

Depending on the location of the position, there may be times where you will be required to travel to various communities or remote areas. This position may also involve heavy lifting, physical work and outdoor work in all weather conditions. Our ideal candidate will be able to take direction and execute tasks in a safe and efficient manner without direct supervision.

Additional Details

• This position will be based in and may require travel to our National Headquarters at Oak Hammock Marsh near Stonewall, MB. Field work will involve travel in south western MB and southern SK.

Requirements

• Pursuing a degree or diploma in Fish and Wildlife, Environmental Monitoring, Biology, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline;
• Possess a valid driver’s license;
• Overnight and extended travel away from home will be required;
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs;
• The successful candidate will ideally have an affinity for the outdoors and a passion for conservation.

Assets

• Experience maintaining sensitive monitoring equipment, collecting field data and working in the field is an asset;
• Experience working with and processing Eddy covariance flux tower data is an asset;
• Experience using R for data processing and analysis is an asset;
• Experience with invertebrate, plant, or bird identification is an asset;
