Climate Caucus:

Climate Caucus is a non-partisan network of 650+ current and former local elected leaders and over 1400 non-elected allies, leading the transformation needed for communities to thrive* within planetary boundaries. *Thrive means communities are resilient, healthy, regenerative, decarbonized, and socially just.

Climate Caucus is a nimble organization that has established itself as an influential player and force to be reckoned with in the local government climate change space. Climate Caucus focuses its work in the intersecting areas of climate change, biodiversity, and social justice within a local government context. Climate Caucus aims to support locally elected officials in three main ways: connection, resources, and advocacy. Under connection, members have regular opportunities to meet with each other and network, both in person and online. Under resources, members have access to a variety of handbooks and webinars that share best practices for climate action across the country. Finally, under advocacy, the members are able to speak as a unified voice to ask other levels of government for the tools and support they need for local climate action.

The staff team at Climate Caucus act as a central hub for climate action at the local government level. As such, they receive opportunities to work with local elected officials and other environmental non-profits on a diverse range of projects. Some recent projects include handbooks on local climate adaptation, aligning local climate action with UNDRIP, and engaging marginalized populations. Climate Caucus is also working on an ongoing federal campaign asking for a flexible and reliable municipal climate action fund. The annual summit is a big project each year, and the organization also has ongoing webinars and calls throughout the year.

The incoming ED will also have the benefit of an incredibly supportive board of directors and a network of over 650 locally elected “hand raisers” who are keen to take action on climate. The ED works closely with the locally elected official members to understand what their needs are and to ensure the organization is serving them as best as possible. Climate Caucus also covers the costs for the ED to attend the annual FCM conference to connect with members in person and promote Climate Caucus’ work.
