The Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC) is seeking a highly motivated individual with a range of people skills and technical skills to join our team.

BARC is a registered charitable non-profit corporation formed in 1991 to represent the public interest in the restoration of Hamilton Harbour and its watershed. BARC’s mission is to deliver relevant and impactful educational programming, to create experiential opportunities for community members to activate and participate in restoration, and to provide thought leadership on water, sustainability, and climate resilience.

BARC envisions a thriving, healthy, and accessible Harbour for all, leading and engaging in education and collaboration to realize that vision through hundreds of volunteers, thousands of participants, and tens of thousands of digital engagements.

Purpose and Role

The Program and Technical Lead will report to the Executive Director and have primary responsibility to develop and deliver educational and volunteer programming, to organize and coordinate community outreach activities, and to engage with teachers, students, participants, volunteers, partners, and leaders from across the community.

The Program and Technical Lead will support the Executive Director with leading insights and specialized knowledge on a range of scientific and other technical issues to improve and elevate programming content, communications products, and grant delivery.

The ideal candidate will have enthusiasm for and experience in program development and delivery for students and volunteers, education, and training in the natural sciences with experience in research and presentations, and the capacity and professionalism to engage with agencies and organizations, funders and supporters, and the public.

The ideal candidate will support BARC to carefully refine its value proposition and contribute to elevating capacity for impact and fundraising, convening and strategic collaborations, comprehensive research and reporting, assessment and evaluation, and programming and communications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver existing and new curriculum-based educational programs, events, and activities.
  • Deliver volunteer programming that includes restoration activities, community-based water monitoring and community science initiatives, and a variety of community outreach activities and events.
  • Ensure that all organizational activities, work plans, and work products benefit from your experience and specialized knowledge of a range of scientific and other technical issues.
  • Support the development of communications plans and content for website and social media and other communications products and special projects.
  • Support the development, monitoring, and reporting of personal and organizational goals, budgets, work plans, and key performance indicators.
  • Support the cultivation of relations with partners and supporters.

Qualifications and Experience

An undergraduate degree in environmental science or a relevant field in the natural sciences and at least three years of relevant experience are required. A graduate degree and more than three years of experience would be preferred.

A proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively with strong networking and interpersonal skills is very important. The ability to take both initiative and direction, jump into situations, speak publicly to a classroom or into a microphone, and to write, design, and create will all be great assets.

You will need to operate a computer, a vehicle, a camera, a canoe, and water testing equipment or being very willing to quickly get up to speed. Experience in proposal writing and grant management, in budgeting and work planning, and with Microsoft 365 software would also be assets.

Salary and Perquisites

This is a full-time continuing position for 35 hours per week dependent on continuing financial supports with a starting annual salary of $55,000 to $65,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Employees start with two weeks of paid vacation per year plus a winter holiday closure. Employees are provided with five paid sick or personal days per year and a wellness subsidy.

The professional development and skills training of employees within the mission of BARC is an organizational priority, with coverage provided for items such as learning resources, tuition assistance, and conference registration. The dress code is mostly casual with occasional days in business casual, chest waders, or work boots, and there is support for the materials needed to work remotely.

BARC’s office and storage is located at 200 Glendale Avenue North in Hamilton, but we work all across the Hamilton Harbour watershed. This position is hybrid and work will occur at the BARC office, at your home office, and at program or event locations across the watershed. This position requires access to a personal vehicle, a driver's license in good standing, and some evening and weekend work from time to time. Employees have considerable flexibility and discretion for managing their own time and effort.
