Position: Education and Outreach Intern

Are you passionate about engaging people with the world around them, especially young students, community volunteers, and leaders of all ages? Are you creative, curious, and enthusiastic with experience in educational and community programming?

The Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC) is seeking a highly motivated individual with a range of people skills and technical skills to join our team this spring and summer as Education and Outreach Intern.

BARC is a registered charitable non-profit corporation formed in 1991 to represent the public interest in the restoration of Hamilton Harbour and its watershed. BARC’s mission is to deliver relevant and impactful educational programming, to create experiential opportunities for community members to activate and participate in restoration, and to provide thought leadership on water, sustainability, and climate resilience.

BARC envisions a thriving, healthy, and accessible Harbour for all, leading and engaging in education and collaboration to realize that vision through hundreds of volunteers, thousands of participants, and tens of thousands of digital engagements.

Purpose and Role

The Education and Outreach Intern will support the Program and Technical Lead to develop and deliver educational and volunteer programming, to organize and coordinate community outreach activities, and to engage with teachers, students, participants, volunteers, partners, and leaders from across the community.

The ideal candidate has post-secondary education and training in environmental sciences or related field with enthusiasm and experience in program development and delivery for students and volunteers and the capacity to engage partnering organizations and the public.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver education programs and events at schools and other venues such as public libraries and summer camp.
  • Deliver volunteer programs and events such as marsh plantings and water testing.
  • Prepare reports and analysis of data collected by volunteers.
  • Assist with communications such as social media posts, website content, and brochures and other materials.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven experience presenting and programming for children and youth.
  • Proven experience in online and in-person community engagement.
  • Comfortable engaging and communicating with the general public.
  • Experience developing promotional materials and educational program content.
  • Confidence in speaking and leading groups without supervision.
  • Passion for the environment with some knowledge about local environmental issues.
  • A post-secondary education in the natural sciences or another field relevant to the position would be preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Eligibility for federal Canada Summer Jobs program funding.

Wages and Timeline

This is a full-time contract position at 35 hours per week for 16 weeks running May 5 through August 22, 2025. Start date, end date, and other scheduling issues are negotiable. Wages are $17.20-18.70 per hour depending on funding and experience. Weekly schedule will vary and require evening and weekend commitments. This position is contingent on securing sufficient funding.
