ABOUT THE ROLE

A Facilitator of Learning (‘Environmental Educator’) is passionate about inspiring young people/students to learn different ways of seeing the environment, through the eyes of Indigenous Knowledges, and to be in harmony with the lands and waters, and all other life forms that depend on a healthy environment.

Based in the Capital Regional District (Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Sooke, Metchosin, Highlands, Juan de Fuca, etc.), you will join the Education Team to improve and deliver place-based education programs for K-High School co-learners (‘students’), acting as a public-facing representative of Sierra Club BC. You may be asked to travel to other areas of the island for this position. You will also engage in pre- and post-program email communication with school facilitators of learning (‘teachers’) to support them to engage with SCBC educational resources and invite a deeper relationship with the beings just outside our doors. You and your team will be responsive to the advice and counsel of the Education Program Lead, and others. You will collaborate most closely with the other Facilitators of Learning and Education Program Lead.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Please note: We encourage applicants who, while not being able to handle all these responsibilities from day one, can demonstrate they have the potential to grow into all of them. We commit to creating an environment that will support such growth.

  • Lead our K-High School programs for learners. This entails going to schools daily to teach land-based learning programs throughout the island, but primarily in the capital regional district.
  • Improve the current program in collaboration with the Education Team to thread a Transformational Learning approach and an Indigenous lens into the program and deliver workshops with learners.
  • Work collaboratively to create and develop educational materials and resources.
  • Provide pre- and post-program support with facilitators of learning in schools (‘teachers’).
  • Network, communicate and collaborate with community partners including schools, school districts, climate action networks/groups, Indigenous leaders, and/or other non-profit organizations.
  • Facilitate education program delivery in-person and online (webinars).
  • Assist with monthly online educational material development.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and practices (e.g. submitting expense forms).
  • Support facilitation of learning happening internally at Sierra Club BC.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Energetic and self-starter, who can convey optimism and inspire action while acknowledging challenging realities of intersectional environmental crises.
  • Experience with education-related work with K-High school learners.
  • Highly organized, adaptable, and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for engaging with younger learners and adults.
  • Experienced in engaging and developing educational materials and curriculum (BC Curriculum knowledge is an asset).
  • Awareness of and curiosity about environmental issues, climate science, sustainability and social justice.
  • Direct experience with and/or education of Indigenous knowledge and worldviews.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with members of the public about environmental issues.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), video conference calls (Zoom, Google meet) and Google Classrooms are assets.
  • Access to a vehicle/transportation is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with young learners from a variety of cultural backgrounds and communities, for whom English may not be their only language (ability to explain content in multiple ways).

COMPENSATION

  • This is a part time contract position (20 hours per week) starting January 2025 and ending June 2025. There is a possibility of renewing the contract.
  • The pay rate is $30.00 per hour.
