Nova Scotia Environment & Climate Action

Position: Community and Events Coordinator
Organization: The OATHE Project
Location: Ideally, the candidate will be in HRM/Halifax area, or will be able to commute to HRM, to attend in-person networking events. However, residing in Nova Scotia is a requirement of our funding partners.

Who We Are Looking For: A networking and technology whiz who is as passionate about environmental change as we are! You will ideally be very good with technology, creative in how you design content, data-driven in your approach, and organized in your ability to manage complex projects, such as the HRM Ecosystem Mapping Project. You must be especially interested in the power of networks and community building to accelerate work in the environmental space. This role will have a key responsibility in coordinating work across many stakeholders. To this you will help with community outreach via digital tools, email campaigns, creating and delivering surveys, exploring funding, analyzing data, maintaining documentation, networking with multiple partners and focusing on community building events.

Job Summary/Who we are Looking for: As the Community and Events Coordinator, you will play a vital role in supporting our various OATHE initiatives that center community-building within the climate ecosystem, such as helping chart our ongoing ecosystem mapping project of climate actors in the Halifax ecosystem, supporting in the marketing of our Climate-Changemakers Challenge to bring youth actors together globally to engage in climate action, and advising on our ongoing co-development of the EarthNet virtual platform for climate community-building. We are seeking a learning-hungry visionary leader who is passionate about environmental change and bringing people together to create resilient communities while uplifting diverse voices. Ideally, you are a networking and technology whiz with strong skills in managing complex projects, creative content design, and have a results-driven approach. You will coordinate efforts across various stakeholders, assist with community outreach through digital tools and email campaigns, create and deliver surveys where relevant, explore funding opportunities, analyze data, and maintain documentation for capturing best practices and/or conducting monitoring and evaluation. Your focus will be on facilitating the development of networking resources and community building initiatives to accelerate environmental work. This role offers an exciting opportunity to add your personal touches on a project and vision that has been worked on and refined by other passionate individuals. Duties include:

  • Continue the development of the directory of organizations working to help mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change in Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Coordinate the development and creation of additional networking resources and opportunities to help climate actors in Halifax Regional Municipality connect
  • Help with community outreach via digital tools, social media, e-mail campaigns, creating and delivering surveys, exploring funding, analyzing data, maintaining documentation networking with multiple partners, and help coordinate community-wide events
  • There will be opportunities to support with the OATHE Project’s other initiatives depending on the youth’s interest and organizational needs, including helping with the Climate Change-Makers Challenge, supporting LCOY Canada, advising on our continued development of the EarthNet platform and/or help develop your own campaigns of interest in the climate community-building space.
  • Exploring questions related to the long-term sustainability of the OATHE Project is also important, which may include things like ideating around our non-profit’s future paths, supporting applications for grant funding to sustain our work in the long-term, and designing new project concepts that can maximize our impact.
  • And more generally, you may assist with a variety of other tasks as needed, for example to help run meetings, advise on our future directions and support in future hiring, and more. This is an exciting leadership role, one that can be exciting for the right person and with lots of space to bring new ideas, make one’s unique mark to our organization and develop the position into their own!

Job Qualifications:

  • Pursuing or a recent graduate of a degree or program in environmental studies, business, communications, community development, international development, philosophy, social sciences, IT or similar; Many backgrounds could be a fit!
  • Experience with and a passion for climate work and community-building are assets, and ideally demonstrated by certifications, participation in climate communities or exploration over personal interests.
  • Experience in outreach or networking, and comfortable talking to new people
  • Previous non-profit experience and existing relationships with climate actors in HRM are assets, along with experience in the environmental sector.
  • We value lived experience, particularly in climate action, as it offers insights often missed by traditional qualifications. We encourage youth from equity-deserving communities to apply and self-identify, as diverse perspectives are essential to our work.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to learn, and open to sharing new ideas to improve the organization.
  • Able to work collaboratively and independently in a remote role with minimal supervision. Strong oral and written communication and ability to use Slack, or similar platforms, to maintain communication with project partners.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Familiarity with technology, including Canva and social media tools, website development tools, Google Suite and more are assets.
  • An understanding or background in climate change work is also valuable, especially to advise on the direction of our environmental programming and ensure it is aligned with global best practices.
  • Above all, genuine passion for the environment, desire to make a difference for our planet, and a belief in the power of collective action to make a massive, global impact


We are also hiring for the role of Digital Strategy, Communications & Partnerships Manager!

As the Manager of Digital Strategy, Communications & Partnerships with a focus on fundraising, you will play a pivotal role in helping OATHE secure the resources needed to sustain and expand our environmental initiatives. We are seeking a visionary leader passionate about fundraising, digital innovation, and youth empowerment. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence our fundraising strategy, optimize digital communications, and build sustainable financial strategies. You will work closely with our team to cultivate relationships with donors, partners, and stakeholders, ensuring that OATHE continues to make a significant impact.

Further details:

Both the roles are 3 month positions funded by the Clean Foundation with an hourly wage of $20/h for 32 hours a week. Anticipated start date 25th November 2024.
