CPAWS NB is New Brunswick’s Voice for Wilderness

We are the provincial branch of a national conservation charity. Our mission is to conserve the land, water and wildlife of New Brunswick for current and future generations of wildlife and people. For over 20 years, we have advocated for the wilderness on land and sea that New Brunswickers love, and the natural areas we all need. We’ve led campaigns that have resulted in over half a million hectares of new protected areas in NB!

We work on the unceded lands and waters of the peoples of the Wabanaki Confederacy, including the Wolastoqey, the Mi’gmaq, and the Peskotomuhkati communities, and we believe we all have treaty responsibilities to each other, and to nature.

The work will generally be based out of Fredericton; however, we are flexible about hybrid or remote work options with occasional travel to Fredericton (for the right person). The flexibility to work from home is an option, and we offer a generous paid vacation (on top of paid time off between Christmas and New Year). After you have completed a probationary period, you will qualify for health and dental benefits plan.

Position Overview:

The Conservation Engagement Assistant is an enthusiastic leader who is passionate about protecting nature and engaging communities in conservation efforts. The position includes community outreach, partnership building, and working with the public in parks, schools, forest trails and community centres, especially for projects in northern New Brunswick. This role is a fit for you if you have strong critical thinking and diplomacy skills, and the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.

What You Will Do:

Build support for new protected nature on land and sea across New Brunswick. You’ll help spread awareness and forge strong partnerships by organizing engaging meetings, activities, and events with Indigenous organizations, environmental groups, community members, municipalities, and schools. You’ll also directly interact with the public, inspire action, and educate students through dynamic classroom sessions.

Work closely with the CPAWS NB team to create impactful conservation campaigns and education projects. This includes traveling to participate in workshops, public events, and collaborative meetings.

Research topics tied to our nature conservation campaigns and turn your findings into clear, accessible reports and shared resources.

Get creative as you help write and design promotional materials to support conservation outreach activities and events.

Play a crucial role to secure funding by contributing to fundraising applications, reporting to funders, and monitoring project progress.

Who we are looking for – Required qualifications

• You must be a resident of New Brunswick or willing to move here for the role, or from a First Nation community in New Brunswick, and be legally able to work in Canada.
• You need to be able to communicate fluently in French and English, both of New Brunswick’s official languages.
• You need a valid New Brunswick driver’s license, and the ability to rent and drive a rental car. You need to be able to travel for work within New Brunswick, and this will sometimes mean overnight stays of 1-3 nights away from home. You need to be comfortable occasionally working outdoors in parks, trails or beaches, in variable weather conditions, for public events, nature walks or other educational activities.

We are looking for someone with as many of the following skills, qualifications, or equivalent experiences as possible. We encourage you to apply if this sounds like you:

• Experience or education in Environmental Studies, Outdoor Education, Natural Sciences, Communications, or a related field with an interest in working to support nature protection.
• Experience, understanding and interest in nature conservation issues and discussing solutions with the public.
• Strong critical thinking and diplomacy skills.
• Well-developed research and writing skills and the ability to refine information to share with different audiences (e.g. government staff, community leaders, partner groups).
• Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva and/or other similar software, and online communications skills with various social media platforms.
• Exceptional organizational skills and ability to track and report on the details of various aspects of projects.
• Experience with event planning, fundraising, or writing applications is a strong asset.
• Proven leadership abilities, ability to take initiative, ability to work independently with limited supervision and to develop own work plan to achieve assigned project tasks.
• Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings for public events.

Salary and Benefits:

• Full-time term position for one year with the potential to become a permanent position.
• 35 hours per week; paid personal days, paid vacation, potential to enroll in medical/dental benefits on completion of a three-month probationary period.
• Salary: $40,000 - $43,000 per year, based on qualifications.
• Anticipated Start Date: March 2025, or as soon as can be arranged with the selected candidate.
