The Opportunity

Greenpeace Canada is seeking a Head of Actions & Organizing to lead its offline mobilization and direct-action strategy. This role is ideal for a skilled leader and organizer with deep experience in grassroots mobilization and non-violent direct action (NVDA) tactics. The Head of Actions & Organizing will oversee the planning, development, and implementation of Greenpeace Canada’s actions and offline engagement programs while managing a team of three Organizer & Actions Campaigners.

Collaborating closely with leaders and staff across Greenpeace Canada and the global Greenpeace network, this role will contribute to program and engagement strategies, ensuring that supporter training, mobilization efforts, and direct actions are impactful and aligned with Greenpeace’s mission. The Head of Actions & Organizing will also play a crucial role in embedding justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and safety (JEDIS) principles in decision-making and campaign strategies to maximize impact and uphold Greenpeace Canada’s values.

Key Responsibilities

This role will see you providing vision and leadership for Greenpeace Canada’s dynamic and values-driven actions and organizing program. You will recruit, manage, and motivate a high-performing team, ensuring clear objectives, effective work plans, a culture of innovation, empowerment, and impactful campaigns.

You will lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Greenpeace Canada’s national actions program and activities, focused on offline mobilization, supporter training, actions, and logistics. Ensuring the safe and well-prepared execution of non-violent direct actions, you will oversee risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and legal compliance related to direct action work.

Working closely with the Co-Heads of Program and Program Management Team, you will integrate actions programming with Greenpeace Canada’s broader campaigns, fostering collaboration across departments and the global Greenpeace network.

You will also represent Greenpeace Canada in external partnerships, engaging with Greenpeace International, grassroots organizations, NGOs, and the public to strengthen advocacy efforts. As a leader in ethical and responsible activism, you will champion Greenpeace’s Code of Conduct and Duty of Care principles.

Financial accountability is a key part of this role, as you will manage the actions and offline mobilization budget, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently and all financial procedures are followed.

You are a courageous leader and skilled organizer with experience in non-violent direct action, grassroots mobilization, and movement-building. You have a strong track record of ensuring safety and impact while exercising discretion and sound judgment in high-pressure situations. With excellent leadership, management, and team-building skills, you can effectively articulate a vision for Greenpeace Canada’s actions and offline mobilization work, guiding a high-performing team to deliver meaningful results.

Your analytical thinking allows you to assess risks, anticipate challenges, and develop effective mitigation strategies. Adept at strategic planning, you ensure that Greenpeace Canada’s actions and mobilization efforts align with broader campaign goals. With strong financial acumen, you can prepare, monitor, and manage budgets responsibly, ensuring effective resource allocation.

Innovative and adaptable, you continuously develop new tools and approaches to enhance mobilization and direct-action tactics. Your communication and public relations skills enable you to navigate crisis situations, engage with the media, and represent Greenpeace effectively to diverse audiences. Experienced in digital mobilization, volunteer management, and engagement strategies, you leverage technology to strengthen Greenpeace’s outreach and impact.

Your interpersonal and networking skills allow you to build alliances with NGOs, grassroots groups, and external stakeholders while upholding Greenpeace Canada’s commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. You have a strong knowledge of environmental and social justice issues, Indigenous rights, the historical impacts of colonization in Canada, and anti-oppression theories, as well as the political landscape shaping Greenpeace’s advocacy.

A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel, including internationally on short notice, are required.
