Do you have a passion for education and cycling? Are you excited to manage one of Canada's largest cycling education programs? HUB Cycling is seeking a Director of Bike Education to oversee a range of cycling education programs throughout BC. This position provides an exciting opportunity to work with funders and partners to grow and adapt HUB Cycling’s education programs and lead a team of dedicated program managers, coordinators and instructors in their program delivery.

About HUB Cycling’s Bike Education Programs

HUB Cycling delivers bike education programs to thousands of youth and adults across British Columbia each year. Our courses are customized for various ages and skill levels and are delivered by our team of trained instructors and delivery partners at schools, community centers, and workplaces. Participants build the skills and confidence needed for safe and enjoyable cycling, and consistently report cycling more often after taking a course.

HUB Cycling has three primary education programs: Bike to School, StreetWise and Bike Bus. Bike to School includes courses run in Metro Vancouver elementary and middle schools as well as across BC with the provincial Everyone Rides Grade 4-5 program. StreetWise includes online and in-person courses for the public as well as specialized courses for specific communities and workplaces. Bike Bus is a new program launching in April 2025.

About the Role

HUB Cycling seeks a Director of Bike Education to oversee these growing education programs. The Director of Bike Education is responsible for oversight, development, budgeting, evaluation, and reporting for HUB Cycling’s Bike Education programs.

The Director of Bike Education will report to the Executive Director, supervise 5 Program Managers, and manage a $2 million budget.

Responsibilities

People Management

• Manage staff and ensure their targets are being met, provide guidance to better achieve our mission:
  • Direct reports: Bike Education Manager, Everyone Rides Grade 4-5 Manager, Instructor Manager, StreetWise Manager and Bike Bus Manager
  • There are also 3 Bike Education Coordinators and approximately 25 Bike Education Instructors on the team
• Cultivate a workplace culture that promotes inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility

Strategy, Operations and Program Development

• Ensure overall success of all HUB Cycling’s education programs, including Bike to School, Everyone Rides Grade 4-5, StreetWise and Bike Bus
• Collaborate with the Director of Program Development and Education Managers in funding development including grant applications, sponsorships, municipal and other proposals / tendering, and other funding opportunities
• Secure funding to support the development of new and existing programs and initiatives, planning for service expansion as needed
• Lead on growing and deepening the bike education programs in line with HUB’s Strategic Plan while maintaining strong risk management processes
• Develop Bike Education policies and contribute to organization policy changes, especially those that cultivate a workplace culture and programs that promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility
• Contribute to the HUB Cycling Leadership Team - provide strategic and operational input to the broader HUB Cycling team (eg: staff meetings, strategic planning)

Budgeting

• Lead annual budget forecasting, course costing, proposal costing and ongoing budget oversight
• Forecasting for the scaling of programs
• In collaboration with program managers, ensure programs run within budget

Monitoring and Evaluation

• Evaluate programs including efficiency, impact, participation, and cost for continuous program improvement
• Collaborate on program data analysis, reporting and presentation, including engagement with academic / external expertise to improve evaluations. Present on HUB Cycling education program evaluation at academic and community venues.
• Quarterly reporting to Executive Director; reports for municipalities and funders

Partnerships and Relationship Building

• Develop governmental, corporate and community partnerships pertaining to Bike to School, Everyone Rides, Bike Bus and Streetwise programs
• Maintain relationships with external partners, such as course delivery partners, funders, sponsors, other active travel organizations (as time permits)

Marketing, Promotion and Social Media

• Ensure appropriate marketing strategy for education programs is executed in collaboration with the Marketing Manager and Program Managers.
• Promoting more widespread bike safety messaging in collaboration with the Director of Campaigns and Inclusion.
• Write program press releases, and do media interviews related to bike education and safety.
• Stay knowledgeable about urban cycling rules and trends, cycling instruction methodology, and related matters as a key source of HUB Cycling expertise.

• Flexible and adaptable to the peaks and flows of seasonal programs.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

• About 5 years of progressive leadership experience in an education or non-profit context.
• Demonstrated proficiency in leading a team to strong results and with high retention.
• Demonstrated ability to secure program funding through grants, sales, private funders and ideally through government service contracting.
• Program budget oversight experience.
• Excellent written, interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with partners, volunteers and staff.
• Committed to the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility.
• Exceptional time management and organizational skills, ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Competency with computer software including Google Suite and CRM software.

• Knowledge about urban cycling rules and trends, and about experiential and online education pedagogy.

Bonus Points For

• Experience working in a not-for-profit service organization.
• Experience with behaviour change or experiential programming design, delivery and development.
• Familiarity with conducting program evaluation.
• Experience working with public school systems.
• Competent public speaker and facilitator.
• Commitment to and enjoyment of bicycling in the city.

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time staff position (35 hours/week) with compensation of $70,750-$86,500 per year depending on experience. Alternative work schedules such as a four-day week are a potential.

All staff are expected to work remotely part-time. The successful candidate will need access to their own cell phone and a reliable home internet connection. Office space is available for up to three days a week at 312 Main Street, Vancouver. Staff must be reasonably available at least once per week for in-person meetings and events in Metro Vancouver.
