Eligibilty

This position is funded in part by Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ). CSJ positions require that applicants MUST meet the following criteria:

  • (a) Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • (b) A Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act [S.C. 2001, c. 27]*; and
  • (c) Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
  • *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

About the Job

Stanley Park Ecology runs stewardship and restoration events throughout the Park on a weekly basis to help restore local ecosystems, improve plant biodiversity, and reintroduce native plant species to previously disturbed areas. The Conservation and Restoration Technician (CRT) will help to support and assist the Stewardship Coordinator and Conservation Technician in carrying out daily tasks related to Stanley Park Ecology’s work within the Park.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead weekly invasive plant removal sessions under the guidance of the Stewardship Coordinator, including supervising/co-supervising small groups of volunteers.
  • Assist with data collection and data management in relation to stewardship programing and plant survivorship monitoring under the supervision of the Stewardship Coordinator.
  • Assist the Stewardship Coordinator in coordinating private invasive removal events with corporate and non-corporate groups. The CRT will help to organize tools and equipment, supervise participants, and help direct work during these events.
  • Assist with any Stewardship research projects in the Park, via direction from the Conservation Projects Manager and Stewardship Coordinator.
  • Assist with maintaining various equipment such as stewardship tools.
  • The CRT will also assist the Conservation Technician in helping conduct research and monitoring in the Park during slower periods of Stewardship programming.
  • Time permitting, the CRT may also assist the Urban Wildlife Programs Coordinator with processing coyote sightings reports and attending outreach events promoting wildlife coexistence.

Qualifications

Education, Experience and Training

  • Experience with invasive species management, botany, stewardship and other relevant education.
  • Familiarity with ecological research methodology and citizen science initiatives.
  • Experience using spatial mapping software (ArcGIS) and/or data analysis and visualization software (R, RStudio) is considered a strong asset.
  • Previous experience working with, and supervising groups of volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of BC ecology, native and invasive plants, and local wildlife.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, and ability to use hand tools to remove invasive plant species.
  • Strong leadership skills, with an emphasis on being able to direct and lead small groups of volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team, in a kind, collaborative, and competent way.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work outside regular (9 am – 5 pm) working hours including evenings or weekends.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Emergency First Aid with CPR (formerly OFA Level 1)
  • BC Drivers Licence considered an asset
