Job Title: Communications Officer
Organization: Captain Paul Watson Foundation
Location: Remote. Preference to candidates based in West Coast North America

Position Overview: We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Communications Officer to join our team. This role is vital in shaping and conveying the foundation’s message to a global audience, increasing awareness of our mission, and engaging supporters through compelling narratives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in communications, a passion for environmental advocacy, and the ability to craft and deliver impactful messages across multiple channels.

About the Captain Paul Watson Foundation: The Captain Paul Watson Foundation is an international, non-profit marine conservation organization that uses direct action to protect and conserve marine wildlife and habitats. Founded by Captain Paul Watson, a renowned environmental activist and co-founder of Greenpeace and founder of Sea Shepherd, the Foundation engages in direct-action campaigns to safeguard the oceans and their inhabitants from illegal activities and environmental destruction. We work on the front lines of ocean conservation, challenging poachers, illegal fishers, and other threats to marine life. Our mission is to educate, inspire, and mobilize global communities to protect marine biodiversity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communications Strategy:
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan to support the foundation’s objectives, campaigns, and fundraising efforts.
    • Craft and disseminate clear, consistent, and compelling messages that align with the foundation’s mission and brand.
  • Content Creation & Management:
    • Write and edit a variety of content, including press releases, newsletters, blog posts, and social media updates.
    • Manage and oversee the social media team, ensuring that content is current, engaging, and reflective of our values and goals.
  • Media Relations:
    • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, media outlets, and influencers to secure coverage of the foundation’s activities and campaigns.
    • Prepare and distribute press releases, and coordinate media inquiries and interviews.
  • Campaign Support:
    • Collaborate with the campaigns team to develop communication strategies for specific initiatives, including public awareness campaigns, events, and actions.
    • Create and manage communication materials, such as brochures, fact sheets, and presentations, to support campaigns and outreach efforts.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Engage with donors, supporters, and the general public through various communication channels, fostering a strong and active community around the foundation’s work.
    • Monitor and respond to inquiries and feedback from the public and media.
  • Crisis Communication:
    • Develop and implement crisis communication plans, ensuring the foundation is prepared to manage any public relations challenges.
    • Act as the point of contact during media crises, providing clear and timely communication.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Communications Officer, Public Relations Specialist, or similar role, preferably in the non-profit or environmental sector.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong ability to tailor messages to different audiences.
  • Experience in media relations, including drafting press releases and managing media inquiries.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools, including content management systems, social media platforms, and email marketing software.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • A commitment to environmental conservation and alignment with the foundation’s mission.
  • Experience in crisis communication and handling sensitive issues is a plus.
