Position: Digital Coordinator
Publication: Magic Canoe (non-profit)
Location: Remote, must be based in British Columbia or Yukon

Magic Canoe is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to being a champion of place-based solutions and ideas that address systems change and the climate crisis in Salmon Nation, the rich bioregion that stretches from Northern California to Alaska. By uplifting community-level stories and sharing them widely, Magic Canoe serves as an advocate for meaningful change and how to live well in place. We are currently seeking a part-time Digital Coordinator to be an essential part of fulfilling this mission as a member of our team.

The Digital Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director to create an editorial direction, generate story ideas and assess pitches from freelance contributors, manage the editorial calendar and ensure consistent, timely and compelling stories are released. They will also work to build partnerships with like-minded organizations in Alaska, British Columbia, northern California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and the Yukon. This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of building and expanding an emerging hybrid media organization, ideal for someone who is deeply passionate about solutions-focused journalism and creative storytelling.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Develop creative content strategies for Magic Canoe.
  • Create compelling visual and written content for Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky, including graphic and reel development.
  • Update and maintain content on Magic Canoe’s website.
  • Create strategies to build online audiences on each platform and execute on them.
  • Manage development and deployment of regular e-newsletters to subscribers, including writing, editing and design in Mailchimp.
  • Analyze and regularly report on performance for all digital platforms and contribute to strategy for continued growth.
  • Set up digital events as required on Zoom and other platforms.

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • Understanding of environmental, social justice and regenerative movements in Salmon Nation (Alaska, British Columbia, northern California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and the Yukon).
  • Exceptional experience in professional management of multiple social media accounts.
  • Strong copywriting skills, including ability to distill complex information into compelling, engaging copy.
  • Strong aesthetic sense to maintain artistic/branding qualities of the website.
  • Experience executing content strategies on different online platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky and email marketing.
  • Understanding and experience in using analytics to propel or pivot ongoing content strategies appropriately.
  • Ability to thrive in a role which requires execution of many small tasks on a daily basis.
  • Creative and collaborative.
  • Experience using Wordpress, with proficiency in Elementor-style editors to maintain and update the website.

Intermediate graphic design experience in Canva and/or Adobe InDesign preferred. Fluency in Buffer, Mailchimp and social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky. Experience managing online advertising campaigns is an asset, but training can be provided. Photography an asset.

Role Details: Remote, part-time contractor position. 15 hours per week, flexible hours with some set times for team meetings. Must live in the Salmon Nation bioregion (Alaska, British Columbia, northern California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and the Yukon).
