Nova Scotia Nature Resort

2 positions: Cook & Kitchen Assistant


Position 1: Cook
Employer: Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort
Dates: full-time from the first half of June at least through October 2025

Location: Indian Brook, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia (On-site housing, see below)
Housing: On-site housing may be available for rent.

Cabot Shores is a Wilderness Resort & Retreat Centre that offers lodgings, food, outdoor & cultural adventures, wellness services, meeting & conference facilities and various types of retreats in an eco-friendly environment.

Our busy restaurant is looking for an experienced, forward-thinking cook who is passionate about food. You will be responsible for preparing meals for 10-60 diners (including couples, families, groups), assigning work in the kitchen, and for kitchen inventory management. If you are passionate about garden-to-table practices, sourcing local ingredients, outdoor cooking, creating nutritious meals from scratch and have previous kitchen experience, then we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities:

  • Organizing, preparing, and executing meals for guests and managing quality
  • Updating menu using local ingredients whenever possible
  • Upkeep of kitchen and ensure cleanliness (observing current covid-19 regulations in Nova Scotia)
  • Providing training and monitoring of other staff to prepare menu items, including seafood, meat, vegetarian/vegan and gluten free dishes
  • Inventory and inventory management
  • Take part in gardening and other food based projects around resort to contribute to goal of sustainability

Essential Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills and outgoing personality
  • Participate in a fun and dynamic team environment
  • Enjoy working as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, prioritise tasks and take initiative
  • Pay attention to detail and fully complete tasks
  • Enjoy being in a rural area of Cape Breton
  • Knowledge of local Cape Breton Island cultural events and outdoor activities

Additional requirements:

Must be in good physical shape, able to lift and move 50lbs bags; organized, efficient in the use of time, ingredients/materials and other resources, cut down on single use plastics; enthusiastic about following green practices including composting; able to work alone and also be an integral part of a team; liaise with Guest Services & front of the house

The position is full-time from the first half of June at least through October 2025. On-site housing may be available for rent.

 


Position 2: Kitchen Assistant
Employer: Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort

Location: Indian Brook, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Job Role and Responsibilities:

  • The Kitchen Helper will assist in the Bistro food handling process: food prep, learning to help service, cleanup and coordination with the front desk, program-coordinator, the garden and other providers of ingredients.
  • The job requires the ability to communicate well, to work under pressure and to interact occasionally with customers and vendors.
  • Previously kitchen helpers have been promoted and several have later gotten involved with full time jobs here and or continued studies or enrolled in culinary programs.

General information:

  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, hold a vadlid work permit, International Student or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Flexible schedule with split shift. Staff Rental Housing and access to the kitchen may be available onsite.
