Position: Program Assistant, Community Outreach

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, Community Outreach, this position will support the Community Outreach and Education team in all areas of community outreach programming. This includes but is not limited to engaging community and corporate participants in environmental stewardship, administering the site assessment and maintenance program, assisting with the implementation of volunteer programs, program logistics, maintaining team assets, and database support.

Candidates should have strong leadership and program coordination experience. They should be able to undertake strenuous physical activities in the outdoors while traversing uneven terrain in potentially adverse weather conditions. This role requires candidates to work on a close-knit team and independently. Candidates should have strong organizational and problem-solving skills. They should also possess field work experience including tree and plant identification and the operation of restoration equipment including small engines. The Program Assistant will be expected to assume responsibility for the safety of program participants and volunteers, co-workers and themselves at all times.

CVC has a strong history of providing stewardship programming throughout the watershed and educating the public about conservation, climate change, and the natural heritage of the Credit River Watershed. Candidates should have strong leadership experience and be able to motivate and inspire audiences to learn about the environment with positive enthusiasm in performing their

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT

  • Post-secondary education in Environmental/Ecological Landscaping, Ecological Restoration, Environmental Sciences or Studies, or related discipline
  • One year of experience related to planning and implementation of stewardship projects
  • Outdoor work experience in tree planting or related conservation activities with participants
  • Experience working with multi-stakeholder partnerships and volunteer organizations
  • Ability to research and communicate scientific concepts in simple language to a variety of audiences
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Knowledge of ecosystem restoration and common stewardship practices
  • Confidence and experience working outdoors regularly with repetitive, strenuous tasks
  • Field-related experience including monitoring, restoration and tree identification
  • Familiarity with database input and management
  • Experience driving larger vehicles and towing trailers (strong asset, training provided)
  • Strong customer service experience with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including database management and word processing
  • Experience with restoration equipment including small motors, water tanks and brush cutters (strong asset, training provided)
  • Able to work evenings and weekends
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license required (condition of employment)
  • Driver’s abstract required (condition of employment)
  • Standard First Aid certification required (condition of employment)
  • Police reference check with vulnerable sector screening required (condition of employment)

SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS

  • Implement and support stewardship and restoration events for participants
  • Administer the stewardship site assessment program
  • Schedule site maintenance, including site preparation and watering
  • Assist with program scheduling and logistics
  • Update and maintain a project tracking Access database
  • Support the Volunteer Leaders program and volunteer appreciation activities
  • Support the purchase and maintenance of team assets including vehicles, trailers, supplies and equipment
  • Represent CVC at workshops, public events, and meetings
  • Support the Community Outreach and Education team in all aspects of programming
  • Other duties as assigned

OTHER INFORMATION

This position generally works 35 hours, Monday to Friday during the off-peak season (winter) and occasional evenings and frequent weekends during peak-seasons (spring and fall). This position requires strenuous physical labour in all weather conditions for site maintenance, preparation, assessments, and outreach events.
