Position: Lower Mainland Green Team Program Manager
Organization: Green Teams of Canada
Location: Various areas across the Lower Mainland and virtual. Successful applicant must live or intend to live in the Lower Mainland region.

  • Full-time: 40 hours per week. Most work occurs on weekdays, with running LMGT activities primarily taking place on weekends.
  • Salary: $55,000 per annum
  • Term: This is a full-time position, with an ideal start date as soon as possible.
  • Expected in-person/virtual work ratio: Around 15-20% in person & 80-85% virtual

Green Teams of Canada (GTC) overview:

GTC is a charity that was founded in 2013. Its mission is to connect, build and empower diverse communities through hands-on activities that enhance health, well-being and environmental stewardship. GTC’s focus is on people and currently organizes invasive plant removals, native species plantings and litter cleanups, though is not limited to these activities. GTC’s programs enable individuals to:

  • Make meaningful social connections, fostering a sense of belonging
  • Connect with nature, deepening their relationship with the environment
  • Raise environmental awareness
  • Promote mental health and well-being

Who we are looking for:

We are seeking an individual with a unique skill set to be an effective community organizer and elevate our program to the next level. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:

Key responsibilities:

The majority of time (approximately 70-80%) will be dedicated to tasks related to running Lower Mainland Green Team (LMGT) activities.

The LMGT currently runs 30+ activities per year (expected to grow) across the region, most which take place on weekends between March-June and September-November.

Tasks include:

  • Leading LMGT activities with and without additional staff
  • Create inclusive communication materials using digital platforms (e.g. Canva)
  • Conduct outreach using email, social media and other creative means (significant time is spent on this task!)
  • Respond to general inquiries about activities in a timely manner
  • Complete site visits
  • Purchase and transport tools, gloves, supplies, in-kind and refreshments
  • Provide environmental education in group and one-on-one settings
  • Supervise large groups of community members to ensure safety and quality of activities
  • Facilitate connections between community members and ensure they have a positive experience
  • Follow safety protocols (e.g. providing first aid, adhering to policies, safely disposing of needles with waste pickers, etc.)
  • Take quality photos (50+ per activity) & videos of community members (1+ per activity) and post them the same day as the activity
  • Act as media spokesperson for reporters covering LMGT activities
  • Collect and assess data on impact on communities and the environment and input it into a database management system (Salesforce) accurately
  • Write personalized volunteer letters
  • Write and post a blog (using Wordpress) about the impact of the LMGT activity on GTC’s website within 32 hours after each activity
  • Manage and consistently create content for LMGT social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
  • Have a personal presence on LMGT social media (e.g. appear in videos talking about activities)
  • Keep storage unit organized and clean, and maintain tools & supplies
  • Manage staff/community members who are supporting the running of activities
  • Communicate with LMGT Partnership Manager to set up activities and ensure partner’s and GTC’s needs are being met

A portion of time (approximately 10-20%) will involve supporting the LMGT Partnership Manager to secure partnerships and improve and develop new LMGT programs. Tasks include:

  • Research, assess feasibility of and design new programs
  • Develop and improve current activities
  • Lead and support grant applications to build and improve the LMGT
  • Determine ways to increase outreach to a wider and more diverse demographic
  • Research and build outreach contacts
  • Build and improve training materials for running activities
  • Support the LMGT Partnership Manager in building and maintaining partnerships with government agencies, businesses, foundations, charities/non-profits, educational institutions, media etc.

Approximately 10% of time will be allocated to various other responsibilities, such as:

  • Provide input on GTC’s policies, plans, standards & processes
  • Train other GTC staff, as needed
  • Report on expenses and manage LMGT’s budget ensuring cost effectiveness
  • Report progress of LMGT activities to Executive Director and board
  • Support fundraising activities (e.g. individual donor campaigns)
  • Complete timesheet and action register daily
  • Keep availability/working hours up to date

Perform other related duties as required

Skills, qualifications and requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g. environmental science, environmental studies, natural resource management, environmental education, communications, event planning)
  • Three years of experience in community organizing or event planning
  • Strong organizational, project and time management skills
  • Digitally savvy with a variety of social media platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to speak in front of groups, lead and/or teach groups of diverse community members
  • Understanding how quantitative data (e.g. number of community members engaged, cubic metres of invasive plants removed) and qualitative data (e.g. stories about the impact of being engaged in environmental action) informs program effectiveness
  • Experience using online/virtual tools and apps. E.g. G-Suite, Excel, Zoom, Skype, Flickr, Wordpress, Salesforce, Canva
  • Ability to build and sustain timely, effective and professional interpersonal relationships
  • Committed to continuously deepening and increasing personal and professional skill sets and experiences
  • Ability to take constructive feedback, ownership of mistakes and using them as opportunities for growth
  • Outgoing, able to connect easily with people and make them feel welcome and heard
  • Energized by interacting and networking with new people
  • Self-motivated and work well independently and collaboratively on a team
  • Bold and not afraid to try new things
  • Can think and act fast in ever-changing situations
  • Work well in a virtual environment
  • A Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a car
  • Must be willing to complete a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Records Check
  • Able to lift and move tools, tents and tables (up to 50lbs)
  • Willingness and ability to store refreshments for community members in home
  • A minimum of one-year commitment to the position
