Job Summary

The Nature Network Senior Organizer is always thinking about what can be leveraged to inspire nature groups and other stakeholders to raise their voices for protected areas in Canada. This vital role on our team loves to be connected to passionate people, and invests their time in building impactful partnerships to get things done. Whether they’re thinking about national days of action, or site-specific educational webinars on the newest protected area, they know that through their partnerships the work can be successful and make a difference for nature. Organizers think systemically, and consider themselves political junkies - but have the privilege of seeing change happen at the local level. They think outside of the box and inspire others to push forward even if the work seems hard.

This position is based out of our office in Ottawa, and Nature Canada is currently offering a hybrid work environment.

The Opportunity:

The federal government has set a historic goal of expanding protected areas to 25% of Canada’s land, freshwater, and ocean by 2025 and 30% by 2030 as part of a commitment to halt and reverse nature loss. Healthy ecosystems and thriving biodiversity are essential for a healthier more sustainable future and Canadians value nature more than ever. Our challenge and opportunity is to mobilize Canadians and diverse stakeholders to ensure Canada meets its protected area commitments for land and ocean while respecting Indigenous rights and supporting Indigenous-led conservation.

Description of Duties

• Develop and maintain relationships with Nature Network organizations across Canada in line with campaign priorities via in-person, telephone and online outreach (following Engagement Organizing principles)
• Build a groundswell of education of and support for protected areas in site-specific locations with a variety of audiences (businesses, youth groups, academics, etc.)
• Work with local groups to provide support and coaching to their conservation campaigns with a lens to capacity building via in-person and digital outreach, mobilization tactics and decision-maker engagement.
• Leverage the political calendar and insights provided from our colleagues working on policy to mobilize nationwide Nature Network actions (i.e lobby days, elections, COPs)
• Developing and executing, as well as coaching others, on creative in person or virtual events.

Summary of Qualifications and Experience

• Relevant higher education or life experience in campaign outreach and mobilizing, ideally in conservation (marine and terrestrial), climate or environmental advocacy;
• Demonstrated track record in building impactful partnerships; you prefer to make the phone call (or swing by for a visit!) rather than just sending the email;
• Good strategic judgement that can see opportunities for change and pathways to get there;
• Excellent communications skills, both oral and written;
• Experience using a CRM;
• Strong time management skills, ability to juggle multiple priorities at the same time;
• Familiarity with conservation science, climate policy and/or environmental law is a strong asset.
• Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.
• Commitment to the mission and values of Nature Canada and a deep commitment to the protection of lands and waters.

Salary

The salary range for this position is $65,000-$75,000/year, with a benefits package that kicks in after a 3-month probation period. Nature Canada is a 4-day work week.
