We're Hiring! The BC Mining Law Reform network is looking for a part-time Communications Coordinator.

Join us to become an integral part of a dynamic and creative network working for environmental and social justice in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and mining-affected communities in BC.

  • Position: Communications Coordinator
  • Contract period: This is a 2 to 3 days/week position for a 12-month contract, with possibility to renew contingent on funding.
  • Location: British Columbia (remotely or offices in Smithers and Terrace)
  • Compensation: We offer a competitive rate of $45/hour for 16-24 hours/week (pending needs).
  • Expected starting date: March 2025 or ASAP

About the role

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for executing communication strategies in support of the BC Mining Law Reform (BCMLR) campaign objectives. The Communications Coordinator will coordinate the development and distribution of the organization’s communication materials, as well as support media relations leveraging both traditional and digital media in B.C. and in Canada. The position is focused on raising visibility of BCMLR’s issues and main campaign objectives, amplifying the voices of mining-affected communities, and reaching and engaging a broad public audience to deepen awareness and engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute creative and effective communications plans and materials
  • Design communication objectives and develop materials for traditional media and digital channels
  • Produce digital content, including graphics and visuals, to expand social media presence
  • Manage BCMLR social media feeds to amplify our work and grow our base of supporters, and potentially help navigate new social media outlets
  • Coordinate BCMLR’s email responses and draft monthly newsletters to supporters
  • Edit and proofread a variety of materials including blogs, website text, newsletters, and reports
  • Coordinate website maintenance and ensure that new and consistent material is posted
  • Support pitch content to media outlets and coordinate media interviews and appearances by BCMLR members
  • Liaise with designers, translators, printing and other service providers as needed for reports and briefing docs
  • Ensure consistent brand management throughout all external communications
  • Continue producing regular podcasts, pending abilities and interests

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in communications, journalism, or in a related field, and at least 3 years of experience in communications, preferably in the not-for-profit sector in B.C.
  • Experience in social justice, environmental, labour, and/or community organizing, activism, and coalition work.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English and proven experience in developing and editing written communication materials.
  • Proven experience with media, including pitching stories or coordinating media interviews.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in social media and digital media, and how to reach various audiences.
  • Proven experience tracking and monitoring social media accounts.
  • Proficiency in software for graphic design and video/photo editing is an asset.
  • Previous experience working with website and e-newsletter software and advocacy platforms, and organizing public events, is an asset.

Founded in 2019, the BC Mining Law Reform Network promotes changes to mineral development laws and mining practices to ensure they are environmentally sound, do not pollute waters, respect community decisions, and account for the costs to clean up toxic mine waste sites. The network today represents nearly 30 local, provincial and national organizations from a wide range of sectors, including citizen and community groups, First Nations, academics, and social justice and environmental organizations.
