Position: Communications Coordinator
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Wildlife Collision Prevention Program
Location: Remote in British Columbia

The Wildlife Collision Prevention Program (WCPP) was formed in 2001, as a partnership between the British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF) and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).

The goal of the WCPP is to reduce wildlife collisions through public awareness, collision mitigation activities and research projects. Every year in British Columbia, over 11,600 wildlife vehicle collisions occur, injuring almost 1,000 people and killing 3. The WCPP strives to make BC’s roads safer for both people and wildlife. The WCPP Communications Coordinator will assist the Program Coordinator in delivering and developing communication aspects of the program. The goal of these initiatives is to increase public awareness on the issue of wildlife vehicle collisions in BC and provide education on collision prevention to motorists; as well as assist to ensure information presented to the public is evidence based.

Communication aspects will primarily include: content creation for and management of social media pages, website content updates, brochure distribution; as well as the possibility of advertisements (radio, digital, etc) and other materials or initiatives as needed. The ideal candidate will have strong communications skills and experience, science (ecology, biology or zoology) knowledge and/or traditional ecological knowledge, and the ability to create content for public awareness/education purposes and increase message reach across multiple platforms.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Manage and create content for social media pages (Instagram, Facebook), as per the WCPP Social Media Plan
  • Use Canva or another graphic design platform to create social media graphics, infographics, and other visual presentation material as needed
  • Assist with brochure distribution
  • Assist with developing, maintaining and updating website content
  • Update radio scripts and/or print ads for fall public awareness campaign
  • Assist with further development of the WCPP Communications and Social Media Plans, including planning public awareness campaigns that align with high-risk times of year and locations for wildlife-vehicle collisions
  • Work collaboratively with and under the direction of the WCPP Program Coordinator on all aspects of WCPP Communications

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Interest in wildlife management or conservation
  • Meet Canada Summer Jobs Program requirements, including: be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and, be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Social Insurance Number
  • At least two years of post-secondary education related to Communications, Biology, Ecology, Zoology, or Wildlife Management
  • Experience and proficiency with social media platforms: Twitter (X), Facebook, and Instagram
  • Ability (or at least willingness to take initiative to learn) to design and produce social media graphics/images and infographics
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Interest and skillset in Science Communications
  • General computer proficiency and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, while working as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Excellent organizational, research, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in developing communications plans and conducting public awareness campaigns
  • Knowledge in brand building
  • Familiarity using Facebook Business Suite
  • Experience with print, radio, and/or television media in the context of writing press releases, being interviewed by media, and/or advertisement creation
  • Graphic design skills, and familiarity using the graphic design platform, Canva
  • Website management and content creation skills or experience

All candidates are required to have a home-based office with access to a computer with video and audio capabilities along with internet access. The successful candidate will be provided with a monthly allowance for home office and phone.

This position is funded in part by the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Job Details:

Term: Anticipated start and end dates - April 28th, 2025, to August 30th, 2025. Contract position - 35 hours/week

There is the potential for a part-time position over the following fall/winter, depending on funding.

Wage: $22.00 per hour
