Position: Communications Coordinator
Organization: Ontario Nature
Location: This position is based at Ontario Nature’s Head Office – 720 Bathurst St, Toronto, ON. This position can work remotely within Ontario in accordance with our Remote Work Policy. The selected candidate must be willing to work from the head office occasionally for team meetings and as requested.

Position Overview

Ontario Nature is seeking a purpose-driven individual for the position of Communications Coordinator. The role increases visibility and builds community of members, supporters and followers to ensure that Ontario Nature is the leading voice for conservation in Ontario. The coordinator drives engagement through the blog, quarterly magazine and social media, to help grow Ontario Nature’s base of support and increase the number and diversity of people connecting with nature.

The ideal candidate has excellent writing, designing and editing skills. They should also have a solid grasp of environmental issues and natural history in Ontario. A seasoned advocate, the coordinator runs effective campaigns to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire people to take action. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of community building and public relations. The successful applicant will join a motivated team, work across departments and report to Ontario Nature’s Communications Manager.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Support public relations

  • Write and edit weekly outreach materials (e.g., blog posts, webpages, eblasts).
  • Design engaging multimedia content.
  • Support with and present at webinars.
  • Ensure outreach aligns with Ontario Nature’s brand.

2. Coordinate advocacy campaigns

  • Implement online campaigns that mobilize and engage people.
  • Harness our communications vehicles to rally grassroots support and promote our work, impact, and priority environmental issues.
  • Grow our community of members, supporters and followers.

3.Coordinate media relations and outreach

  • Write and distribute media releases, advisories and statements.
  • Foster relationships with reporters.
  • Draft internal talking points.

4. Create social media content

  • Plan, create and publish content to increase digital reach and engagement.
  • Lead social media campaigns to promote priority environmental issues, collect emails and increase our membership.
  • Monitor and analyze social media performance metrics.
  • Steward sponsors, donors, member groups, influencers and partners online.

5. Contribute to ON Nature magazine

  • Implement digital campaigns to increase readership, engagement and paid subscribers.
  • Proofread each issue during production.
  • Join quarterly editorial meetings and pitch story ideas.
  • Write short articles.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a field relevant to the position (e.g., journalism, environmental studies, communications)
  • Minimum of three years of relevant work experience
  • Familiarity with environmental issues and the non-profit sector
  • Demonstrated social media competence and experience
  • Excellent writing skills with an ability to craft compelling messaging with keen attention to detail
  • Keen eye for design, composition and visual storytelling
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.) or similar tools
  • Self-motivated and highly organized
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize a varied workload
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and work effectively as part of a team

Desirable Assets

  • Educational or employment background in conservation and/or journalism
  • Versed in best practices of public relations and media relations
  • Knowledge of Ontario’s natural history

Anticipated Start Date: May 2025

Type of Position: Full-time, permanent

Compensation: $49,849 – $61,177 per year, commensurate with experience

Location: This position is based at Ontario Nature’s Head Office – 720 Bathurst St, Toronto, ON. This position can work remotely within Ontario in accordance with our Remote Work Policy. The selected candidate must be willing to work from the head office occasionally for team meetings and as requested.

Working Conditions: This position requires some evening and weekend work for meetings, events and to meet certain deadlines. Lieu time may be accrued for this. The role requires extensive sitting, typing and time spent viewing computer screens.
