Opportunity

If you’re interested in exploring whether hands-on climate action work in the trades could be a good fit for you, this is a fantastic opportunity to find out.

Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC) is a youth-led climate action program that delivers tangible community benefits at the local level while generating momentum for a just and sustainable future across British Columbia. We provide young people with opportunities to make a difference in their communities while earning wages and developing skills that will prepare them for meaningful future work and engaged citizenship.

We are excited to announce a partnership with the BC Insulators Union to give you an innovative and unique opportunity. In this 3 month program, you will be introduced to work as an Insulator, be paid a livable wage, and have the support of YCCBC as you explore if this career is a good fit for you and an opportunity to start an apprenticeship.

BC has some of the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets in the world. Mechanical insulators have the training, expertise and commitment to meet these exacting standards. If all BC's buildings with insulation deficiencies were retrofitted, annual energy use would be reduced by 280 Gigawatts! That’s enough energy for nearly 24,000 homes and saving nearly $10 million! It would also cut 50,000 tonnes of CO2 per year – that’s the equivalent of taking 10,000 cars off the road!

At YCCBC, our vision is about supporting young leaders who can communicate, collaborate, navigate barriers, and build capacity by embracing challenges as an opportunity to grow and learn. In the YCCBC, young people can improve their own lives while becoming part of something bigger than themselves. We are thrilled to be collaborating with the BC Insulators Union to bring this opportunity to you!

Here’s what you can expect:

Your onboarding: You will spend about 20 hours learning from YCCBC and the BC Insulators Union about climate change, and the profession of Insulators.

Your work: You will then be placed with a local organization that has been selected by the BC Insulators Union who are known to be great instructors and mentors, are committed to sustainability and climate action, and are committed to creating and maintaining a respectful and healthy workplace.

You will be under the guidance of a skilled Insulator and perform duties such as:

  • Selecting amount & type of insulation and method of securing it.
  • Measuring and cutting insulating material and coverings to required shape and dimension.
  • Fitting insulation around obstructions or shape insulation materials & protective coverings.
  • Installing vapour barriers and finish insulated surfaces by applying metal cladding, canvas, plastic sheetings or cement.

Once a week you will have a check-in with YCCBC for support.

Earn while you learn! Your compensation will include:

  • $24.76 hours
  • Your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) included work boots
  • Skytrain pass or vehicle mileage depending on the worksite location

Bonus! At the end of your program, if you decide to further your career and join the Insulators Union for their apprenticeship program, YCCBC will pay for your membership dues for the first year! Learn more about the apprenticeship program here.
