ABOUT THE ROLE

The Climate & Energy Campaigner develops and implements strategies to strengthen climate action in B.C. They report to the Campaigns Director and work closely with the Campaigns, Organizing and Communications teams.

They focus on supporting B.C. communities to transition away from fossil fuels to a zero-carbon, clean energy economy in a manner that respects and strengthens Indigenous jurisdiction.

They are deeply committed to the vision laid out in the Sierra Club BC strategic plan and eager to play a key role in our transformation and decolonization journey.

This position is primarily remote but with occasional in-person events and meetings in Vancouver and Victoria.

HOW YOU’LL CONTRIBUTE:

  • Develop and implement SCBC’s strategy to reduce climate pollution and protect biodiversity by increasing clean energy, improving energy efficiency, and reducing fossil fuel production and use in B.C.
  • Track BC’s progress implementing climate policies, climate pollution and energy trends, and develop programs and campaigns to achieve the climate goals of our strategic plan.
  • Develop low-carbon energy and energy conservation campaign.
  • Build and maintain relationships with B.C. government staff and officials to advance low-carbon energy in B.C.
  • Support and participate in public events, webinars, conferences, rallies, and other strategic campaign activities.
  • Draft and edit written material related to campaign goals, including website content, email marketing materials, and webinar scripts.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization with stakeholders and the media.
  • Collaborate closely with ENGO colleagues and coalitions to oppose new fossil fuel developments and support renewable energy and conservation.
  • Track and report on work plan goals and progress.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, policy, environmental studies, or equivalent.
  • Minimum five years' experience in climate, clean energy and/or nonprofit advocacy sector.
  • Experience working in intercultural contexts and upholding principles of reconciliation, and justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Broad knowledge of climate science, climate policies and energy issues in B.C. and globally.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Team player with ability to work independently, think critically and show sound judgement.
  • Ability to engage, maintain and build relationships with diverse partners, including experience in government relations and working with First Nations partners.
  • Ability to find common ground and bring people with diverse viewpoints together.

COMPENSATION:  

  • Five days per week (37.5 hours), with a salary range of $58,000-$67,000
  • Four weeks of paid vacation and additional paid time off during holiday office closure.
