Climate Change, Climate Finance

Hiring: Senior Analyst – Taxonomy
Organization: Investors for Paris Compliance
Location: Remote within Canada
Start Date: January 6, 2025
Job Type: Either half time or full time contract for one year, with possibility of renewal

About the organization

Investors for Paris Compliance (I4PC) is helping to drive the shift towards climate finance in Canada. We are a shareholder advocacy organization focusing on the net zero commitments of publicly-traded companies and work with investors to hold companies accountable and to drive change.

This position is hosted by I4PC but includes working closely with other organizations such as SHIFT and Environmental Defence.

About the position

We are seeking a senior analyst to support the work of developing a credible green and transition financing taxonomy in Canada. A process will get underway in 2025 to flesh out Canada’s taxonomy. This will involve multiple stakeholders, and we anticipate a robust debate regarding the shape and details. Done well, a taxonomy can help direct billions of dollars into climate solutions. Done badly, it can provide greenwashing cover for maintaining or even expanding the financing of polluters.

There is a small network of NGOs working together on the taxonomy, and this position will be in service to that network. Other people may take on the roles of sitting on various committees or of appearing in public communications – this position will support the convening, research, and analysis side to support those functions. Depending on the person and their skillset, that could change into taking on more.

The taxonomy work is half time. We are open to a candidate who just wants half time work, but are aware that many are seeking full time work. If the candidate is seeking full time work, the other half of their time can be devoted to other I4PC activities. More on this below.

Duties and Responsibilities – Taxonomy

  • Conduct research into other taxonomies around the world to glean lessons on substance and process to bring to Canada.
  • Prepare position papers on various industries related to the taxonomy, including energy. These may be internal in nature, or may become submissions into the process or released publicly.
  • Help convene the NGO taxonomy network, hosting video calls, setting agendas, and capturing decisions. Backstop overall project management.
  • Participate in strategy discussions to determine the most appropriate interventions for the network participants.
  • If appropriate, conduct outreach to other taxonomy stakeholders to test for alignment.
  • If appropriate, participate in taxonomy committee activities, whether in a support role or directly.

Duties and Responsibilities – Other I4PC Work

I4PC is engaged in a range of work. Please visit our website to investigate. If you are interested in a full time position, we would like to hear from you regarding what aspects of our work most appeals to you, and what you think you can add.

While we are a shareholder organization, filing proposals constitutes a minority of what we do, although is often the catalyst for change. Much of our capacity is devoted to research, analysis, and communications work outside of AGM season. While our website reflects our work regarding banks, insurance companies, and other financial firms, some emerging areas of focus for us in 2025 include:

  • Exploring the role of auditors and ratings agencies in net zero. These are pillars of the financial system but to date have received little attention regarding their role in either fostering progress towards net zero, or alternatively propping up the status quo.
  • LNG financing. There is a gold rush mentality regarding LNG projects, often accompanied by the narrative that LNG is a transition fuel. But, the economics of LNG are shaky, and the evidence shows that LNG is not a climate solution. We are working to expose investors to this information.

Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of experience with research/writing projects. Experience in climate, energy analysis or consulting is strongly preferred, but not required if you have an aptitude for it and are willing to learn quickly.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communications skills.
  • Good interpersonal and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills including work planning, tracking, and reporting on outcomes. You are details-oriented.
  • Ability to think critically and make well-informed, timely decisions.
  • Willingness to be nimble, flexible, and to work closely with a team in good humour.
  • Background in climate policy issues and/or sustainable finance is an asset.
  • Background in multi-stakeholder processes and/or negotiations is an asset.

Contract, Compensation, and Reporting

This is a full time contract, for one year with the prospect of renewal. The compensation is $42,500 for half time or $85,000 for full time.

For the taxonomy work, you will report to a three person Steering Committee composed of people from I4PC, SHIFT, and Environmental Defence. There is a broader network, but this is the management team.

For other I4PC work, you will report to the Executive Director. We work in a flat, collaborative manner with lots of opportunity for shaping strategy and work products.

Location

This role is remote, anywhere in Canada.
