Net-Zero Energy Transition

Position: Director of Net-Zero Fuels
Organization: The Transition Accelerator
Location: anywhere in Canada

The Transition Accelerator is a charity dedicated to solving Canada’s business and social challenges while moving Canada down viable pathways to a competitive, net-zero emissions economy by 2050. The Accelerator is seeking a motivated individual who wants to help drive the advancement of the organization’s mandate.

We work with partners ranging from Indigenous groups, governments, industry, and civil society to co-create practical visions of what we think the future could look like, then build pathways to these new futures. For us, the future is economically strong, with healthy people and communities. The future is fair, with net zero emissions. Moreover, the Accelerator understands that only by working together will we be successful in attaining these ambitious objectives.

About the Role

The Accelerator believes that Canada will out-compete other jurisdictions for investment and have a prosperous economy in all regions of Canada if we have a net-zero energy system. This system is likely to have two main interconnected components (that may differ significantly by region): electrification and a suite of net-zero fuels. Given the importance of the net-zero fuels component, we are hiring a seasoned manager to lead this component of the Accelerator’s work.

Reporting to the Vice President, the Director of Net Zero Fuels will:

  • Lead the development and implementation of the net-zero fuels component of the Accelerator’s integrated net-zero energy strategy;
  • Direct and deepen the work of the Accelerator’s ongoing net-zero fuels initiatives, including analyses, projects, and the launch and operation of hubs (lead or support role). This may include coordinating strategic frameworks alongside the work of governments and industry;
  • Develop and deliver presentations, reports, and other materials to communicate the Accelerator’s net-zero fuels work to a variety of audiences;
  • Collaborate with teams across the Accelerator to identify and advance opportunities for net-zero fuel adoption in select regions and sectors;
  • Ensure the Transition Accelerator develops strategic relationships with and solicits ongoing feedback from key stakeholders including government, industry, Indigenous groups, academia and civil society;
  • Stay informed about developments in the net-zero fuels field and identify potential areas for the Accelerator to engage in;
  • Undertake other responsibilities that may arise.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following experience and personal traits. Please note that the Transition Accelerator values diverse perspectives and will consider relevant life experience alongside professional qualifications when reviewing applications:

  • At least eight years of proven experience in net-zero fuels policy, project management, decarbonization analyses or research, and collaborative, stakeholder-facing roles;
  • At least eight years experience in managing collaborative teams, and especially managing direct reports;
  • A university degree, preferably in engineering, public policy, political science, climate science or a related field;
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English (bilingualism in both Canada’s official languages is a very strong asset);
  • An interest in advancing Canada’s transition to a competitive net-zero emissions society;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with a diversity of stakeholders, including government, industry, academia, and Indigenous groups;
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Out-of-the box thinker with strong empathy, professionalism, and a drive to make things happen;
  • Responsible, takes initiative, and likes to be held accountable for results;
  • Demonstrated capacity to synthesize and transform knowledge into compelling messages and materials to support collaborative work;
  • Ability to work in a quickly changing, sometimes uncertain environment;
  • Experience and comfort in managing remote processes and teams;
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in using the Microsoft Suite of applications, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Additional Information

  • This is a full-time role, with duties that will evolve as the organization grows;
  • This is a fully remote position, but the selected applicant must permanently reside in and work from Canada.
