As a Planning Engineer, you will be a climate- and hydrology-focused specialist within the River Engineering team. You will use and develop your climate science and hydrotechnical skills by leading and participating in a variety of projects which support river flood resilience, potable water supply, wastewater and stormwater lines of service as well as climate adaptation and environmental performance objectives. Work within the role will focus on how our changing climate is affecting our watersheds to inform watershed planning, river engineering, water services and related operations, infrastructure design, and planning policies. Primary duties include:

• Lead studies and data reviews to refine river and watershed climate projections, including liaising and/or managing projects with researchers and/or consultants on current data, modelling and methodologies applicable for our region to determine potential changes to the seasonality, magnitude and frequencies of low and high flows in Calgary's rivers and creeks.
• Build capacity of the River Engineering team and other City staff on future flow projections, climate science and available data.
• Create and share climate study findings and key messages with city staff, project teams and the public.
• Support ongoing operational and planning work with seasonal hydrologic analyses.
• Lead or support projects on flood damage modelling, watershed metrics and reporting, creek hydrology and flood mapping, infrastructure design, dam safety and asset management.
• Participate in the River Forecaster-on-Duty rotation to monitor watershed and river conditions for flood, drought, and ice jam risks, and participate in annual flood response preparations and emergency planning and response activities.
• Support development reviews and bylaw/policy updates, providing guidance on how The City can create resilience to future climate and flood impacts through planning policies and development regulation.
• Collaborate with other City teams engaging with Calgarians, the insurance industry, academics, and others to deliver programs.

Qualifications

• A degree in Civil, Water Resources, Environmental Engineering or a related Engineering field and at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. • Experience must include climate science and hydrology modelling, along with experience using hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, Raven, FEWS, and/or SWMM/XPSWMM.
• A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business use OR the ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit is required.
• A master's degree in a water resources, hydrology, climate science, meteorology or a related field is an asset.
• Experience in hydrologic analyses, hydraulic modelling, river forecasting, flood management, dam safety, and analyses of watershed hydrology for future climate states is an asset.
• Familiarity with GIS/ArcMap/ArcGISPro and advanced Microsoft Excel skills are assets.
• Project management training and experience are assets.
• The successful candidate will have proven initiative to tackle new projects, a track record of achieving project results, and strong communication and collaboration skills.
